Florian Cornu and Arnaud Bonzom, authors of MAVA and the Singapore Startup Ecosystem & Entrepreneur Toolbox, today launched the fourth edition of Map of the Money.

Claimed as “the most efficient tool for entrepreneurs and startups to raise funds in Singapore,” the site contains an exhaustive list of 65 active Venture Capital (VC) firms in Singapore, completed with verified data. It contains detailed information about the VC firms, including information of more than US$4 billion asset under management.

“We decided to verify the data by surveying 81 VC firms, allowing us to have accurate data on 65 VC funds with their size as well as their minimum and maximum size of their respective first checks. Last but not least, this gave us the ability to display the 25 per cent percentile and 75 per cent percentile via an adapted version of the box and whisker diagram,” Cornu and Bonzom explained in a press statement.

“Thinking of how the map will be used, we made it interactive, bringing to bear a more visual interaction with the data and allowing entrepreneurs to explore the full set of data via Airtable,” they added.

The authors claimed that the methodology was based on the past investments made by VC Firms in the last 12 months or for new funds, the ability to invest in Singaporean startups.

However, they also noted that with dozens of accelerators around, “They have not been included in this edition as they would warrant a whole study on their own.”

Map of the Money itself began in 2009 as a project started by Meng Weng Wong, which is known as the one of the co-founders of JFDI.

He had updated the map twice in 2012 and 2014. As JFDI recently announced the end of its incubator activities, Wong then moved on to his other project Legalese. In the meantime, Cornu then developed the spreadsheet version of the map (called MAVA) with some help from Bonzom, who improved the quality of the data.

“We decided to combine the best of both worlds, allowing the extensive data set to be played with through an interactive representation,” they explained.

When it comes to recent trends in Singapore’s VC landscape, the authors highlighted six major points:

  • American VCs joining the ecosystem with 500 Startups –500 Durians for Southeast Asia (US$26 million), 500 TukTuks for Thailand (US$12 million) and 500 Vietnam for Vietnam (US$10 million). There is also Sequoia Capital (Southeast Asia) with US$960 million for India and Southeast Asia.
  • The rise of new seed VCs such as 500 Startups and SeedPlus.
  • Seed VCs graduating to Series A, as with the case of Golden Gate Ventures, Jungle Ventures and Rakuten Ventures. Each of them started with or below US$10 million and now are closing a second fund between US$50 million and US$100 million.
  • The Series A stage matured with examples such as Monk’s Hill Ventures, Sequoia Capital and Venturra Capital.
  • Ignition of the Series B stage with B Capital Group being an example.
  • Launch of new corporate funds such as CapitaLand Limited, Challenge Ventures, DeClout Limited, Garena Ventures, PSA unboXed, Razer Ventures, SPH Fund, Wilmar International Limited and YCH Group Pte Ltd.

Bonzom is currently working for 500 Startups and Cornu has worked for Majuven.
