Here’s why African edtech startups are struggling to find a viable business model

At its peak, Elvis Chidera claims Prepup — an edtech startup which he launched in 2015 — had over 120 000 users across West Africa, with over 100 students subscribing to use the Android app’s premium functionalities every month.

However, early this year — after investing $10 000 of his own money into the business over the past three years — Chidera (pictured above) had to close the Lagos-based business which employed a team of five engineers and content creators that provided high school students with a “high quality, personalised way” to study and prepare for exams.
