#Africa Nigerian learning solution wins TRECC, Seedstars challenge

//

A radio-based education solution from Nigeria has been awarded CHF1,000 (US$990) after winning a challenge hosted by TRECC and Seedstars World that sought solutions delivering educational products and services to rural areas with the highest education needs.

Disrupt Africa reported in December on the launch of the Rural Distribution Ideas Contest, aimed at generating ideas from Africans that have lived these challenges for how education companies and entrepreneurs can expand their businesses and impact to rural markets.

The winning idea from Nigeria intends to host a daily local radio programme where tutors can expose learners to basic literacy, complemented with additional learner-focused interactivity. This includes allowing listeners to SMS or call in during the broadcast to ask questions or request content.

“Radio is a real opportunity to improve education in rural areas due to its low-cost, ability to have the content be locally-focused and delivered in the local language, and audio-focused learning approach, making it accessible to people who have difficulty reading,” said TRECC.

“Further, it is a great opportunity to further catalyse demand for quality education in rural areas, which will ultimately lead to more kids staying in school longer and more sustainable markets for education companies. We selected this idea in particular due to its interactivity with listeners and focus on both traditional education as well as health and civics content. We are excited to be providing CHF1,000 to help its launch.”
