E-learning startup Pass.ng, gaming company Genii Games and iROKO founder Jason Njoku were named among the winners at last week’s West Africa Mobile Awards (WAMAS) held in Lagos, Nigeria.

Disrupt Africa reported in March a number of West African startups had been nominated for the inaugural awards, which reward mobile and tech companies across the region and was supported by Mobile West Africa (MWA), AppsAfrica.com, and the Mobile Ecosystem Forum (MEF).

The 10 winners were announced at a gala event on April 21, and include Nigeria’s Pass.ng for the Educational & Personal Development Award, Genii Games, also of Nigeria, for the Mobile App & Game Award, and iROKO founder Jason Njoku, who took home the Outstanding Industry Achievement Award.

Other winners were Wild Fusion (Brand Development on Mobile), Zeepay’s Andrew Takyi-Appiah (Young Gun of the Year), mPedigree Goldkeys (Innovation in the Industry), Amebo App (Social Entertainment & News), Cellulant E Wallet (Societal Development), CommercePointe (Commerce & Retail), and PayWithCapture (Money, Banking & Financial).

“Our mission was to promote and honour the fantastic innovation across the mobile and tech ecosystem in Africa,” said Matthew Dawes, co-founder of the WAMAS.

“We had diverse entries from 10 countries and both the finalists and winners are a testament to how mobile is revolutionising society in West Africa. Congratulations to all of the 2016 winners and thank you to the judges, sponsors, and media partners across West Africa that helped to make the WAMAS possible.”
