Startups in Surabaya-based PENSky will receive mentorship, media coverage, and participation in DailySocial’s programmes

Jakarta-based technology media company DailySocial today announced that it has partnered with Surabaya State Electronics Polytechnic (PENS) to support its campus-based business incubator PENS Sky Venture (PENSky).

PENSky is an incubator, accelerator, and coworking space which aims to help PENS student and alumni develop their own startups. Launched on Friday, April 30, the initiative’s long term goal is to foster the growth of creative industries in Indonesia.

DailySocial will support the initiative by inviting startup founders to speak at PENS’ events, inviting mentors to help PENSky’s portfolio startups, providing media coverage, and inviting PENSky’s portfolio startups to take part in DailySocial’s programmes.

In a messenger chat with e27, DailySocial CEO Rama Mamuaya explained why the company decided to team up with a Surabaya-based campus.

“We purposely aim for something outside of Jakarta. Especially with Surabaya being one of the biggest cities in Indonesia. The entrepreneurship level is relatively higher than other region, plus PENS is one of the best tech hubs,” he wrote.

“They have won global awards in robot competitions, electric cars competitions, among the few,” he added.

The rise of Indonesia’s digital industry had triggered local universities and colleges to build their own incubation programme, in order to support and foster entrepreneurial spirit among students.

Universities that are known to have its own incubator programmes are BINUS University, Nusantara Multimedia University (UMN), and Gadjah Mada University (UGM).

Students from BINUS University presented their startups at the recent Echelon Indonesia 2016.
