Faustine Tan, Co-Founder and Managing Director Indonesia and Malaysia at last-minute hotel booking app HotelQuickly confirmed today the company laid off 10 employees from its marketing department.

She cited a new growth strategy for 2016 as the main reason for the layoff.

“We centralised more marketing activities at our head office, yet me personally and other team members in Indonesia will keep maintaining on what we do and also execute on the new strategy. Indonesia is one of our core markets, nothing changes. This is a normal business decision and new strategies happen in every startup or big corporate,” she wrote in an e-mail to e27.

When asked whether the lay-off has anything to do with the company’s recent acquisition of Japanese hotel booking app Tonight, Tan said that the answer is both yes and no.

“The acquisition of Tonight was also part of the new strategy and while we have a team in Japan (like in most of our 16 markets), we will centralise many marketing operations in Bangkok, such as social media, customer service, CRM, or other functions where we can unlock synergies. Restructuring the marketing strategy has, however, nothing to do with the expansion to Japan,” she further explained.

Moving forward, Tan also mentioned HotelQuickly will announce new features in the near future to further support the company’s marketing strategies.

“The local marketing team in other countries did a great job over the past three years and we’re all really proud of what we’ve built up so far, and the team enabled HotelQuickly to enter this new stage. We could not have done it without the team; now that we have the current momentum, it’s time to shift gear and scale further,” she ended.

Founded in 2013, HotelQuickly currently partners with 12,000 hotels across the region.
