#Asia Chinese smartphone makers Huawei, Meizu, and Xiaomi push curved displays and edges

Bezel-less phones are increasingly attractive to users. This is why

Curved display and curved edge phones are growing in popularity worldwide, with Samsung scoring design plaudits for its own designs and Xiaomi’s Mi Mix selling out within 10 seconds of its first flash sale.

Now, Android Headlines reports that more “bezel-less” models are coming out, this time from Chinese manufacturers Huawei and Meizu. They will have to compete, though, with the Mi Mix’s rounded edges and very high screen-to-body ratio, 91.3 percent.

The Mi Mix has had its layout redesigned to fit as much display as possible while retaining earpiece, camera, and proximity sensor functions, notes Ars Technica, and has not had to compromise on internal space to do so. The Huawei model will, allegedly, be fully curved, along all four sides.

Unlike Xiaomi, which has not yet entered the European market, Huawei is well-placed there, with The Register reporting that it is now competing head-to-head with Apple in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) markets, though still well behind leader Samsung.

Reviews for its latest flagship products, the Mate 9 and Nova, have generally been positive. (A Porsche-branded version of the Mate 9 is available, with some other extra features and curving, for about US$1,600 in Europe.)

Meizu is a new entrant to the market, formerly a music player manufacturer that branched out into smartphones about 8 years ago and now retails its flagship MX6, sold in Europe and North America.

Although curved display phones are more aesthetically appealing, they can also be fragile if they lack Corning Gorilla Glass protection, as is the case with the Mi Mix.

It is also easy to let it slip because of the ceramic body. It is often easier to hold a phone that does have bezels, and these also reinforce the frame.
