A sad news popped up in Indonesian e-commerce scene this weekend as online supermarket Sukamart announced that they are officially closing down two of their e-commerce channels, sukamart.com and brand.sukamart.com as per June 27, 2016.

The company will focus on running its B2B e-commerce channel office.sukamart.com instead, citing a takeover by Japanese e-commerce platform MonotaRO as the background to the pivot.

“Up until now, we provide services for individuals and corporations through our sites. However, we have decided to change our strategy to focus more on business for our corporate customers,” according to the statement on their website.

sukamart.com is the company’s main channel which focussed on selling groceries and fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) such as cooking oil, milk, and soap. Meanwhile, brand.sukamart.com focussed on lifestyle goods such as fashion, bags, and accessories.

MonotaRO itself is an e-commerce platform that focusses on industrial tools procurement.

The market for online grocery shopping service begins to get more competitive, with startups such as HappyFresh and Go-Jek’s Go-Mart providing services in the sector.

At the other hand, Indonesia begins to see the rise of B2B e-commerce platforms that cater to business-related needs such as office supplies.

Recently, the Government Products and Services Procurement Policy Institute (LKPP) signed four local B2B and B2G e-commerce platforms — AnugrahPratama, Ayooklik, Bhinneka, dan Mbiz– to mark their entry to the government’s e-catalogue system.

The four startups will become the government’s official vendors for various products and services procurement, made more transparent and efficient through the e-catalogue system.

e27 sees that the partnership reveals a new opportunity that B2B and B2G e-commerce startups can tap into.
