While the saying goes, ‘there is no such thing as a free meal’, a promotion from Grab next week comes pretty darn close.

From April 4 through April 8 (Monday through Friday), commuters in Singapore’s Central Business District (CBD) will be awarded 10 free GrabCar rides by going cashless and using the GrabPay system for the first time.

GrabCar is the company’s answer to Uber, in which commercial drivers use traditional cars (as compared to a taxi) to pick-up and drop-off riders.

For anyone familiar with using ride-hailing apps, the process is very straight forward. In the Grab app, select menu, then ‘GrabPay’. Upload the credit card information and voila! enjoy ten free rides for the week. No promo code required.

Furthermore, if a user has already uploaded their credit card information but has not used it for GrabCar (maybe the person only uses the traditional taxi service) then the promotion still works.

A few rules to note:

• The pick-up and drop-off locations must be within the CBD as defined by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (Visit the Grab promotion site for a more detailed list of qualifying neighborhoods).
• The ten rides are point-to-point. This means no additional stops. So no driving around CBD hollering at tourists.
• The deal is only valid between 6am to 6pm (the company is marketing the deal as a way to make a lunch break more interesting).
• Yes, the promotion is only for first-time users.

So, next week, go to that Mexican restaurant that is just a little too far for a lunchtime excursion, and buy a margarita with the extra ‘taxi money’. Just maybe chew a mint on the way back to work.
