The world’s largest contract electronics manufacturer, Foxconn Technology Group, and a French Internet of Things (IoT) startup named Actility have teamed-up to launch a new business aimed at creating IoT solutions in China.

Called ThingPark China, the new Hong Kong-based company will build and develop long-range low-power sensors that can be used for smart city development, remote home monitoring and other applications like agriculture, energy and industrial management.

“China is an opportunity like no other IoT market, it is growing 30 per cent a year, and a third of the world’s 15 billion connected things in 2020 will be in China,” said Actility CEO Mike Mulica in a statement.

Initially, ThingPark will focus on Chinese customers and sell SaaS software, data management technology, network solutions and connectivity tools. The other important products for the company are low-powered wide-area gateways — hubs for connecting sensors to the private and public communications network.

ThingPark believes its first major customer will be local governments as the development of ‘smart city’ initiatives becomes an increasingly important part of political agendas globally. For individuals, the company explained an early consumer base could be parents who want to use the products to monitor their children.

“IoT has the potential to transform cities, industry and transport, and also the way we live and work. The synergies generated by bringing together Foxconn’s design, manufacturing and technology capabilities and Actility’s expertise in LPWA networking technology, will enable us to capitalize on the immense opportunities presented in the IoT era,” said Foxconn Executive Vice President Lu Fang-Ming in an official statement.

Lu went on to highlight the complementary skills of Foxconn’s design, development and manufacturing capabilities with Actility’s expertise in the IoT sector.

Hong Kong shares a border with one of the world’s most important manufacturing cities in Shenzhen, which acts as something of a gateway to Guangdong province one of China’s economic hubs.

Actility has multiple offices in France, and a presence in London, the Netherlands and Singapore.
