Malaysia and Indonesia-based services-on-demand platform RecomN has closed US$1 million in seed round of financing led by Gobi Partners.

RecomN will use this investment to enhance existing operations in Malaysia and Indonesia, as well as to expand to other Southeast Asian countries in 2016.

“Finding a professional to renovate your home, plan your wedding, or photograph your baby can be incredibly stressful. We are making it easier for people to make informed hiring decisions for themselves and their families, where trust and recommendations are more important than price. At the same time, we are helping worthy professionals get the recognition they deserve,” said Alex Tan, Co-founder and Regional Marketing Director.

RecomN was co-founded in July 2014 by Jes Min Lua, a technology and growth strategy consultant; Tan, a technology marketing and content specialist; and Anthony Eka Wijaya, an operations and growth hacking specialist.

The startup operates RecomN.com in Malaysia and Sejasa.com in Indonesia, connecting customers with highly-recommended service professionals. Customers can submit their requests for various services through its website or mobile app.

Within hours, they will receive multiple responses from qualified service professionals, complete with cost estimates, portfolio of their work, and reviews from previous customers. This means that customers save time, while receiving the assurance that the community has vetted the service professional they hire.

Popular service categories include home renovations and repairs, event and party services, wedding services, classes and training, freelance business support services.

Over 5,000 service professionals across Malaysia and Indonesia already use RecomN.com and Sejasa.com as an extension of their sales and marketing network, helping them find new business opportunities and generate additional income. RecomN also offers a verified professional programme, designed to help qualified SMEs elevate their professional brand and reputation among customers.

As of March 2016, RecomN claims to process a monthly volume of nearly 15,000 service requests, with over 500,000 visitors per month. The company is experiencing 60 per cent monthly growth, with over US$250,000 in services processed each day.

“Up to this point, we focused on two things – making sure each customer is introduced to the right service professional for the important moments and projects in their lives, and that good professionals can grow their business and reputation based on performance and reviews. We have grown mostly through word-of-mouth, and it is now time to accelerate and expand this sustainable formula to other countries in Southeast Asia,” said Lua, Co-founder and GM of Malaysia.

“If you look across Southeast Asia, the potential for growth in the service industry is huge. Indonesia has 4 million SMEs and Sejasa.com has been acquiring hundreds of service professionals each week – all while still bootstrapped,” added Anthony Eka Wijaya, RecomN Co-founder and GM of Indonesia.

Founded in 2002, Gobi Partners is a leading venture capital firm with an investment focus on early-stage, digital media, IT and TMT companies. Headquartered in Shanghai, Gobi has six offices across China, Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. The firm has raised seven funds to date, and has invested in over 130 portfolio companies across China and ASEAN.
