The Kemang area in South Jakarta seems to be competing with Slipi in West Jakarta as the favourite base camp for tech startup communities.

Apart from Luxola and Go-Jek, online marketplace for courier service Deliveree has been using its new Kemang office since August.

When e27 walks into the first floor where the office is located, we notice that about half of it is still under renovation.

“We are expanding to the entire first floor to accommodate our customer service team,” says Ratih Indriani, Office Manager of Inspire Ventures, the holding company for Deliveree. The renovations are expected to be finished by June 2016.

Backed with US$2 million in funding from both Inspire Ventures and Ardent Capital, the startup is currently looking to expand their team of 40 employees.

Later on our visit, Tom Kim, Regional CEO of Deliveree, joins our conversation to explain the important role that customer service is playing in Indonesian market.

“It is very uncommon for a tech company to have such a strong customer service division as ours. We learned that here in Indonesia, even an app-based service like us still need lots of human touch. Customers still need to be able to talk to representatives,” he explains.

Grey area

“We will also share this office with Inspire Ventures’ other ‘lab companies’, which are Super Awesome and Marketspot,” says Indriani.

“The colour grey was chosen so it doesn’t clash with the other companies’ branding,” she adds.DLV 4

There are also huge paintings of the Dalai Lama and of Muhammad Ali that the management has yet to decide where to put.DLV 2

At the entrance hall, we notice two boxes that serve as phone booths.

“But often we end up using them to take pictures,” Indriani admits with a laugh.

On Tuesdays, we wear green

The Deliveree office has many fun traditions, and many of them are related to food.

Lunch is provided for free by a catering service, and each employee has a turn to choose the menu for the  next three days.

For today, lunch is fried chicken with stir-fried vegetables.

“Our boss also likes to buy us snacks, like dim sum,” Indriani explains. “We also have free beers, but only after 6 PM!”

The company also has a uniform tradition where employees wear a signature green and yellow Deliveree T-shirt on Tuesdays and a batik shirt or dress on Thursdays.

But this particular tradition might just be the envy of many toy collectors.

“For every new employee who has just joined us, on their first day, we give them a Funko Pop! toy,” says Indriani.

Work-life balance is also the reason why Kemang, a trendy area with cafes and restaurants nearby, was chosen as the office’s location.

“For employees living in [the] suburban area, there is less traffic jam,” says Indriani. “We also like the social life around here. We like to go for karaoke or hang out after work.”
