In a move that suggests a precursor to regional expansion, iflix announced today it has appointed Cam Walker, formerly of EmTek, to the position of Head of iflix Indonesia — a country in which the OTT network does not operate.

Walker was formerly the Head of Content Development at Indonesia’s second largest media company EmTek.

The media conglomerate, through its subsidiary company Surya Citra Media, participated in the US$45 million strategic investment inked between iflix and Europe’s Sky network last week.

“[Walker] has a strong track record of delivering effective results and understands the nuances of the Indonesian market very well. iflix has gained exceptionally strong momentum in Southeast Asia over the past months, and Indonesia is a key part of our expansion strategy,” said iflix Co-founder and CEO Mark Britt in an official statement.

iflix operates in Malaysia, the Philippines and Thailand but the company said it will, “continue to roll out its world-class service to additional key Southeast Asian markets in the coming months.”

Clearly, by hiring an executive to run country operations, as well as releasing the above statement, iflix has plans to enter the Indonesian market sooner rather than later.

iflix is an alternative to Netflix in Southeast Asia and claims tens of thousands of hours of television and movies from all over the world. With a monthly fee, users can watch content on their desktop, mobile phone or tablet.

As Head of Content Development at EmTek, Walker was the head of a consolidation process that transformed the company’s production joint ventures, internal production team and studios into an independent content company called PT IEG. He also has some OTT experience, overseeing the distribution at EmTek.

Prior to EmTek, Walker spend over four years as Vice-President – Territory Head, Indonesia for Fox International Channels.

“The growth opportunities in Indonesia are vast and I look forward to working with the team to drive these opportunities forward, and delivering on the iflix vision,” Walker said.
