LinkedIn FINAL

In an effort to boost site speed and improve member experience across the Asia-Pacific region, Silicon Valley’s most famous professional social network, LinkedIn, announced today its S$80 million (US$59 million) data center went live in March 2016.

The data centre is 23,500 square feet (or about 2183 square metres — about the size of 4.5 NBA regulation basketball courts). It also has 4.2 megawatts of allocated power.

The center is located in Digital Realty’s facility located in Jurong.

LinkedIn cited its Asia-Pacific growth rate as justification for the move. Between January 2013 and the end of 2015, the company doubled its member numbers to over 85 million (which breaks down more than 16 million users in Southeast Asia, over 34 million in India and an additional 7 million in Australia).

Singapore passed 1 million users during that two-year time frame.

Furthermore, the company’s revenue in the region tripled.

With the growth, the LinkedIn director of data services Michael Yamaguchi acknowledged the company’s regional Points of Presence were not enough.

“Our data center strategy is to partner with colocation providers to build wholesale data centers. As our member base continues to grow across Asia Pacific, we began to prioritize the region and search for the best location for our first data center on the other side of the Pacific Ocean,” he wrote in a blog post.

As for metrics, LinkedIn values environmental impact, expansion capabilities, network diversity, power quality, talent opportunities, security, and defense against natural disasters.

“Singapore is the natural choice for us to locate this new data centre, as it is already our Asia Pacific headquarters, and it offers the cutting-edge infrastructure and talent we need to continue to improve the service and global connectivity we provide to our members and clients,” said Olivier Legrand, Managing Director of LinkedIn in Asia Pacific, in an official statement.

LinkedIn worked with the Singapore Economic Development Board to facilitate the establishment of the data center.

“As more global organisations place greater value in the Asia-Pacific market, Singapore continues to be the ideal location for companies to establish their mission-critical infrastructure as well as engineering and data analytics talent,” read a statement by Kiren Kumar, Executive Director Infocomms & Media for the Singapore Economic Development Board.

Kumar also added the move was part of long-term strategy to make Singapore the data capital of Asia.
