Taking a leaf out of the success of various motorcycle taxi companies in cities such as Hanoi, Jakarta, Bangkok and London, an Indian startup is launching similar service in the city of Gurgaon (near Delhi) soon.

MTaxi, a startup founded by Arunabh Madhur, plans to launch bike taxis on December 1, which aims to offer cheaper and faster mobility in the city, reports The Economic Times.

The services are priced at INR 25 (US$ 0.40) for the first three kilometres and INR 5 (US$0.07) per additional kilometre.

As per this report, MTaxi has already received all the necessary approvals from the district transport department, traffic police and the state transport authority.

Initially, the company plans to introduce ten 100cc bikes which will be ridden by trained bikers. All the two-wheelers will have commercial registration numbers and will bear yellow number plates (which differentiate them from private vehicles).

While it will start as a taxi-hailing service, MTaxi will soon launch an app for an on-demand bike taxi model as well.

“Bike taxis are a successful model in countries such as Indonesia and Vietnam. We have very carefully studied the feasibility before hitting the road,” Madhur said.

In cities like Jakarta, there is already tough competition among various players including Go-JekGrabBike (from GrabTaxi), and their latest competitor Blu-Jek.

MTaxi is not the first company entering the bike taxi space in India. Recently, Hey Bob launched its motorbike taxi service in Bangalore and HeyTaxi in Mumbai. Ola, the country’s largest taxi and autorickshaw hailing service, is also reportedly eyeing the motorbike taxi market.
