The Singapore government has announced today that its entire public service will be adopting Workplace by Facebook, a  team communication tool built by the social network.

Previously, the government was using a custom-built social network called Cube. But that fizzled out because it was not mobile-friendly, had bad UI/UX and slow loading times.

In contrast, Facebook can be used on both smartphones and tablets.

For non-governmental organisations and educational institutes, the service is free. For other corporate and governmental organisations, Workplace comes with three monthly pricing tiers,

  1. US$3 per user for the first 1,000 employees;
  2. US$2 per user for the next 9000 employees and;
  3. US$1 for each additional user

Currently, 15 Singapore agencies comprising of over 5,300 public servants are on board Workplace. The government plans to roll it out across the board — about 143,000 employees — by March 2017. This means the government will likely be footing a monthly bill of around US$151,000 per month.

Peter Ong, Head of the Civil Service said that more than 82 per cent of its public servants who have signed up for Workplace are now active users. He added that by using Workplace to broadcast major announcements, it has helped reduce the number of internal emails.

The government has other plans to integrate more features in Workplace are in the pipeline. One example is a specialists skills marketplace that will help public servants share skill sets with each other.
