With MyRepublic bidding to be Singapore’s fourth telco, Singtel pulls out the stops
Singtel has launched a new customer benefits programme named Singtel Circle* that offers subscribers — to a combination of its various mobile, Internet and cable TV plans — access to free unlimited local mobile data on Sundays and to weekend movies.
To qualify, customers must have subscribed to Fibre Entertainment Bundle+, Fibre Enter Entertainment Bundle, mio Home and selected postpaid mobile plans under the same subscriber ID. Customers eligible for the Singtel Circle programme will receive a confirmation SMS from Singtel by today.
The free local mobile data can be used from midnight to 11.59 PM on Sundays, while weekend movies are available from midnight on Saturdays to 11.59 PM on Sundays (with both starting from this weekend).
“Many of our customers are entire households that subscribe to the full suite of Singtel services and we feel that this is a small way to thank them for their support. Through Singtel Circle, we will reach out to more than half a million customers with free unlimited mobile data on Sundays, giving more value for their dollar,” said Kuan Moon Yuen, CEO, Consumer Singapore, Singtel.
Since cutting data caps offered to post-paid mobile consumers from 12GB to 2GB in 2012, a move that Starhub and M1 — the two other telcos in Singapore — followed, customers have had to make do without alternatives.
But, with MyRepublic having recently launched 4G mobile service trials as part of its bid for the fourth telco licence in Singapore, and its promise to bring back data bundles of 10GB and more in addition to offering unlimited mobile data if they secure that licence, this move by Singtel could be seen as a bid to assuage discontent amongst existing customers in the face of competition from a rising upstart.
