Indian live sports app Rooter today announced that it has completed an undisclosed funding round led by Bollywood star Boman Irani. Enabled by renowned entertainment and celebrity management firm Kwan Entertainment Pvt. Ltd, the round also sees participation from Dhruv Chitgopekar (Partner at Kwan Entertainment) and Prantik Dasgupta (Corporate professional and avid sports enthusiast).

The startup plans to use the funding to “strengthen” its tech team and create strategic partnerships with various sports platforms, teams, fan clubs and associations.

Rooter is a sports social gaming platform that connects sports fans around the world and engages them through a unique live match prediction game. Fans create their rooter profile with teams or players they support and get a Passion Score based on their social media engagement.

The platform primary focus will be football events, such as the European club football seasons and Indian Super League (ISL). It also caters to cricket fans during ongoing season, and is planning to reach other sports such as Formula 1 and NBA.

Rooter is currently focussing on Indian market.

“Rooter is based on the inherent need of sports fans to connect and interact with one another across the real and the digital worlds. The idea behind Rooter was unique and interesting, which is why we have been able to raise funds from investors such as Boman, Dhruv and Prantik. This comes as a major shot in the arm for us, and encourages us to push on and use technology to make the sports consumption experience even better and more enjoyable,” said Rooter CEO and Founder Piyush in a press statement.

This investment marks Boman Irani’s first foray into the tech startup landscape, though he was not the first Bollywood actor to get into the industry. Leading actors such as Amitabh Bachan and Salman Khan are some of the names who had been known to back at least one startup.

Other platform which offers similar service to Rooter is Singapore-based Ballr, which recently entered the Indonesian market through a partnership with media mogul VIVA Group.
