The Indian e-commerce major’s new campus has a gym and a game room to help keep employees going for their goals
What do you do when your workforce increases by four times within a year? Move to a new office, of course. For Indian e-commerce major SnapDeal, just accommodating 5,000 in one place wasn’t enough, they set up a new campus equipped with all the amenities to keep employees happy at work as well as on their breaks.
Spread across two towers with six floors each, SnapDeal has made sure its employees are well taken care of even when they work long hours.
From a swanky fully-equipped cafeteria to a basketball court and an impressive gym and salon, the e-commerce major has made sure its employees have more than one reason to look forward to Monday mornings.
e27 takes a quick tour of the new campus 450,000-sq ft campus in Gurgaon, that became operational in August.
Whether you’re a virtual gamer, or like to grab a cue stick for a game of pool, SnapDeal has provided a variety of options to its staff during breaks.
The video game room with bean bags and large-screen TV and the latest video games provides a great space for those more attracted to virtual reality. On the other hand, pool, table tennis and foos ball tables, along with board games are also available.
“Our Gurgaon campus is home to 5,000 of the biggest and sharpest minds in the country and the future of e –commerce in India will be written from this office,” SnapDeal Co-founder and CEO Kunal Bahl had said about the new campus.
Talk about pressure on the employees to perform. So, to tackle the stress after a hard day’s work, 100 metres away from the main SnapDeal building is The Studio that houses a state-of-the-art gym and a salon for those after-office stressbusters or a quick makeover before an evening out.
Though The Studio’s services aren’t free, SnapDeal says costs are extremely subsidised. And it’s more the convenience and the quality of service provided that attracts employees.
In August, the Indian e-commerce giant raised US$500 million in its latest funding round. China’s online marketplace giant Alibaba, Taiwanese manufacturer Foxconn and Japanese telecom corporation Softbank all participated in the deal.
Snapdeal had earlier raised over US$1 billion — including a previous US$627-million investment from Softbank in October 2014.
Founded by Wharton graduate Bahl and IIT alumnus Rohit Bansal, the company is estimated to be valued at around US$5 billion.
With the backing of strong investors, the company did not hold back on spending on the new campus. The huge cafeteria on the ground floor is an example of that.
Keeping a 5,000-member organisation motivated can’t be easy, so SnapDeal has painted inspirational quotes across its walls.
The sixth floor, meant primarily for training and ideation, has rooms named after Ivy League colleges from Stanford to Harvard.
To provide an eco-friendly touch, Snapdeal offers bicycles to its employees to commute between the campus and its other office, which is about a kilometre away. Employees can also get bikes issued for the weekend and take them home with them.
