MatahariMall CEO Hadi Wenas takes us on a tour around the video game-inspired office
Indonesian e-commerce platform MatahariMall hosted a housewarming party today for its brand new office in Kuningan, South Jakarta.
Attended by the media, celebrity bloggers, and executives from both Lippo Group and MatahariMall, e27 was treated to a group tour around the brightly coloured office guided by CEO Hadi Wenas himself.
“Our office design is inspired by video games, especially racing games such as Super Mario Kart. We call it ‘Super Momo Kart’, taken from our mascot Momo,” said Wenas.
He further explained that the office is divided into four different sections, which he likened to the ‘mini universe’ concept in digital games. Each section is represented by a colour, bearing themes such as ‘Volcano’ for red, ‘Ocean’ for blue, ‘Forest’ for green, and ‘Sky City’ for yellow.
The wall of each section is decorated by quotes hand-picked by the employees themselves.

Sauna in the office?
We were stunned after Wenas informed us the office has its own sauna room. Thankfully, our jealously was bridled a moment later.
“It’s not exactly a sauna, it’s actually a more relaxed form of meeting room. Or we can say it is a sauna for the brain,” says MatahariMall Chairman Emirsyah Satar as we check out a small meeting room with plastic grass, swing, and bleachers inside.
Inside the company’s ‘War Room’ we noticed a unique feature: There was only one table and no chairs at the meeting room.
“We intentionally put no chairs inside the meeting room in order to encourage speed. So our meetings are conducted in only 30 minutes or so,” Wenas explains.
How about Wenas himself? Where does he work?
“I don’t have my own room. I’m always working at the War Room,” he answers.
The office also holds occasional fun activities such a Biggest Loser competition, in which employees aiming to lose weight as part of their New Year Resolution compete to win a grand prize of a free gym membership.

The race track
One of the more noticeable features in the office is the ‘race track’ that surrounds the whole office area — another feature designed to highlight the ‘speed’ aspect of the business.
Wenas said that he often uses a hoverboard to move around the office on this track.
“It’s not as hard as it seems,” he says.
