#Africa Techne Summit set for Alexandria in May

The second edition of the Techne Summit is to be held in Alexandria, Egypt, in May, with two startup competitions to take place at the tech entrepreneurship event.

To be held on May 7 and 8, the Techne Summit this year takes the theme of “Technology.Innovation.Talent”, and will focus on the importance of fostering innovation, creativity and entrepreneurship, to nation building and the development process.

The Summit will feature presentations by international industry figures, including Engineer Yasser El Kady, Egypt’s Minister of Communications and Information Technology; Wael Fakharan, head lead at Google X Middle East; Sameh Elmallah, managing director for Intel Egypt and Levant region; Ken Singer, managing director of the Sutardja Center for Entrepreneurship and Technology at UC Berkeley; and Rami Al-Karmi founding partner of innovateX and mentor at 500 startups; to name a few.

Startups will showcase their businesses, while two startup competitions will also take place at the Summit.

The SeedStars Alexandria leg of global startups pitching competition Seedstars World will see 10 startups invited to pitch in front of an investment panel and compete for the title of “Most promising seed-stage startup of Seedstars Alexandria 2016”.  The winner will go on to compete in regional and global legs of the competition.

Event sponsors Aramex will also host the Aramex Techne Summit Startups Competition,with the three winning startups to receive Platinum,,Gold and Silver Winner packages, comprising discounts on Aramex cash rates for international inbound and outbound express services, membership offers for Aramex Shop&Ship services, as well as mentorship.

“With Techne Summit 2016 our enthusiasm has transformed into passion and our hope into confidence. We are confidently optimistic that the event will be one that produces a highly positive impact on the technology industry in the region,” said Tarek El Kady, managing director at Markade Agency, the event organisers.

According to El Kady, the inaugural event held last year convened 48 speakers, 900 attendees, 39 startups and 100 volunteers, from 12 countries worldwide.

For this year’s Summit, El Kady said he hopes to double the speakers, attract four times as many startups, and triple the attendance, while also reaching out to more countries in the region.
