China transit elevated public bus-2

Just two months ago, we first caught a glimpse of China’s utopian-esque solution to clogged highways – a ginormous elevated bus called the Transit Explore Bus (TEB) which allows cars to run underneath. Back then, it was just a tiny scale model that could fit into the palm of your hand.

Now, it appears the TEB has accelerated from blueprint phase to prototype stage. According to Xinhua News, TEB-1 has just conducted a road test in Qinhuangdao, North China’s Hebei Province.

The prototype measures 22-meter-long, 7.8-meter-wide and 4.8-meter-high and carries up to 300 passengers; far below the 1,400 passenger capacity touted by the project’s chief engineer Song Yuzhou back in May. Still, the carrying capacity is still well above traditional public buses – a conventional single decker bus in Singapore carries only up to 80 passengers.

Countries notorious for massive traffic congestions such as Indonesia, France, India and Brazil have expressed interest in the TEB.

Now, here’s the beast in action.
