Life Goal: Become the next Brock and lead a rock-type gym for a week

Niantic has revealed today a new feature coming to Pokémon Go that will give trainers an improved chance of catching Pokémon of a specific ‘type’.

The bonuses will reward trainers for catching many Pokémon of a specific type by then making it easier to catch wild pocket monsters of that type.

As trainers reach higher medal tiers, their chances of stumbling upon a rare Pokémon improves.

For Pokémon that have two types (Niantic brought up the example of Pidgey — both a flying and normal pocket monster) the bonus will average between the two.

The announcement did not give a specific timetable — just ‘soon’.

While it is hard to imagine how the decision will impact the ‘on-the-ground’ of gym fighting, the update does harken back to the original Gameboy series.

Fans will remember that gyms had themes (catching a ton of bug Pokémon before entering the rock gym to fight Brock) and part of the fun was being either disadvantaged or well-matched to take over the gym.

Based on how quickly the average gym gets taken down, it seems unlikely that a group of trainers could build a ‘Rock gym’ and maintain it for any relevant period of time.

Still, it is fun to imagine that I could become a ‘water trainer’ who has the best water Pokémon in the land while being weak in the rock type.
