ASEAN Data Startup Accelerator is looking for startups in agriculture, future cities, Internet of Things, media, telecommunication and financial services

Open Data

Open data is one of the more interesting tools the tech community can use to affect change in society. The idea is that certain information should be free to the public and available for use by anyone.

PetaJakarta.com may be the most famous example in the region. The company leveraged open data and crowdsourcing to provide comprehensive real-time information about flooding in the city during storms.

For entrepreneurs looking to get started on the path of open data, there is a new accelerator in Malaysia that may be the perfect fit.

Located in Kuala Lumpur, ASEAN Data Startup Accelerator (ADSA), is hoping to be both the kickstart, and bridge, to help open data startups get off the ground.

The programme is a collaboration between the Open Data Institute and the Malaysian Digital Economy Corporation and is looking for “startups with a vision about how data can create economic value and make the world a better place”.

The programme is particularly interested in startups from the following sectors: agriculture, future cities, internet of things, media, telecommunication and financial services. ADSA is country agnostic in the ASEAN region.

Perks for startups include access to a co-working space, showcasing in front of investors, mentorship, a week-long bootcamp in London and access to Open Data Institute’s network.

For Southeast Asian companies looking to use data to change the world, ADSA may be the perfect place to start.
