Recently Ma has been proposed as adviser for Indonesia’s steering committee on e-commerce

United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Secretary-General Dr. Mukhisa Kituyi announced that Alibaba Group Founder Jack Ma has been appointed as Special Adviser of the UNCTAD on Youth Entrepreneurship and Small Business.

The announcement was made in New York City at a special event held in his honour.

“Mr. Ma is an influential and respected pioneer of the internet era, innovator, entrepreneur, and philanthropist,” Dr. Kituyi said in a press statement.

“He brings a visionary approach to entrepreneurship, a thirst for learning, and a belief in a better world that make him a perfect match for UNCTAD. Together we will be able to reach out to communities that feel left behind in today’s global landscape with a message of hope and self-empowerment,” he added.

In his new role, Ma will champion initiatives for young entrepreneurs and small businesses, particularly in developing countries, to participate in global trade. He will also raise awareness about the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

The entrepreneur himself described the appointment as “an honour.”

“I have spent my career working with entrepreneurs and know the positive social and economic impact when people are given the opportunity to participate in the global economy,” he said.

Prior to this appointment, Ma had proposed the concept of Electronic World Trade Platform (eWTP) which is a way to bring small and medium-sized enterprises more fully into the global economy. The proposal was included in the official communiqué of the recent G20 summit.

Ma has also been proposed by the Indonesian government as an adviser for the country’s forthcoming e-commerce steering committee.
