#UK Amazon devices hit record sales despite recent reports of confusion at its hardware division (AMZN)

Amazon announced on Tuesday that it had the best sales weekend ever for its consumer devices over the Black Friday weekend, despite recent reports of confusion at its hardware unit.

The best selling products were the 7-inch Fire tablet and the Fire TV streaming device, each seeing a 6x and 3x bump in sales, respectively, compared to the same period of last year.

The company added that the Fire TV was the top selling streaming media player across all US retailers in the three-month period from July through October.

On top of that, Amazon’s Echo personal assistant device is proving to be a massive success too, as it was the top selling $100-plus product on Amazon.com, it said.

“This has already been the biggest holiday shopping season for Amazon devices, and we’re energized by the year over year growth for all of our product categories,” Dave Limp, Senior Vice President, Amazon Devices, said in a statement.

In typical Amazon fashion, the company didn’t disclose specific numbers for its sales, so it’s hard to tell exactly how well these devices have been selling overall. But regardless, it’s an encouraging sign for Amazon’s hardware division called Lab126, which was reported to be experiencing lower morale and confusion over priorities after the Fire Phone flop in a recent WSJ report.

The report said in August that Lab126 had laid off dozens of employees, mostly the ones who worked on the Fire Phone, but the lack of focus and “shifting, and, at times, enigmatic priorities” had led to frustration internally.

But that didn’t seem to slow down Amazon’s hardware ambitions as the company made its device business the focal point of its most recent earnings release. During a press call held after earnings, Amazon CFO Brian Olsavsky hinted that the Fire tablets were selling extremely well, saying, “We’re really excited about the response, we’re going to be building millions more of the Fire tablets than we had originally planned.”

Still, there’s some questions around Amazon’s claim to the Fire TV being the most popular streaming device in the US. According to research group Strategy Analytics, Google Chromecast was the top-selling streaming device in the past year, followed by Apple TV, while Amazon’s Fire TV and Roku came in at third place.

#UK Iraqi forces surround Ramadi, but it could be a long siege

//

Iraqi security forces take combat position at the front-line with Islamic State group militants as Iraqi Army and allied Sunni volunteer tribal fighters supported by U.S.-led coalition airstrikes are tightened the siege of Ramadi, the capital of Iraq's Anbar province, 70 miles (115 kilometers) west of Baghdad, Iraq, Monday, Nov. 30, 2015. Iraq's military command has told civilians in the Islamic State-held Ramadi to leave the city, a sign that an operation may soon be underway to retake the provincial capital. (AP Photo/Osama Sami)

BAGHDAD (AP) — After months of sluggish progress, stalled advances and outright failures, Iraqi troops and militias backed by U.S.-led airstrikes have surrounded the key city of Ramadi and appear poised to launch a new attempt to wrest it from the Islamic State group.

The battle that is shaping up threatens to turn into a drawn-out siege, with thousands of residents caught in the middle as the forces try to wear down the militants since they took over the capital of western Anbar province in May. Western officials and analysts warned that the strategy of a methodical, slow siege could make the fight even more difficult.

On Monday, the Iraqi military dropped leaflets into the city, telling the remaining residents — estimated at anywhere from 4,000 to 10,000 — to leave, the strongest signal yet that an assault is imminent.

But residents told The Associated Press on Tuesday that the militants have clamped down, setting up checkpoints across the city to monitor civilians’ movements and prevent anyone from going.

“Loudspeakers from mosques give warnings that civilians are not allowed to leave, and anyone who tries to do so will be either arrested or killed,” one resident said, speaking on condition of anonymity for fear for his safety.

Ramadi, like the rest of Anbar province, is overwhelmingly Sunni Muslim, the minority community that complains of discrimination by the Shiite-led government in Baghdad. Some Sunnis in other parts of Anbar and in northern Iraq welcomed IS rule, at least initially.

Resentment of the extremists has been stronger in Ramadi, but some residents worry about the cost of dislodging the Islamic State, also known as ISIS, ISIL and its Arabic acronym, Daesh.

“Of course we want this to end,” another resident said, referring to IS rule and the government siege. But he said he also fears increased airstrikes and clashes, with him and his family unable to escape.

The Islamic State group’s capture of Ramadi was an embarrassing blow to the Iraqi military. The two sides had been battling over it since the previous summer. But in May, the militants unleashed a wave of suicide bombings that stunned the city’s defenders, and police and troops collapsed and fled. The jihadis swept in and took control, raising their black banner over the main government headquarters.

The city became part of the large swath of territory IS holds in Iraq, including almost all of Anbar province and the northern city of Mosul, linked with areas of northern and eastern Syria that they also control.

For several months, Iraqi troops and an umbrella group of militias — mainly Shiites — have been fighting in Anbar. Although progress was often slow, they clawed back territory surrounding the city. In recent days, their determination to retake Ramadi has been boosted by a victory in northern Iraq by Kurdish forces, who recaptured the strategic town of Sinjar.

The most recent estimates from the U.S.-led coalition say there could be as many as 1,000 Islamic State fighters inside Ramadi. Iraqi officials said their forces surrounding the city number several thousand.

The encirclement of Ramadi is a key first step in retaking it, said Interior Ministry spokesman Saad Maan. The Iraqi forces will start clearing the city of IS “in the coming days, less than a week,” he added.

“The aim is to cut off all supplies to Daesh,” said Brig. Gen. Ahmed al-Bilawi, who commands a unit within the Anbar command. “We are just awaiting the zero hour to attack the center of the city of Ramadi in order to free it.”

But a long siege could just allow the IS fighters to dig in more, said retired Lt. Gen. Mark Hertling, who led U.S. forces in Iraq in 2007-08 as they fought to end sectarian warfare that pushed the country to the brink of civil war.

Iraqi commanders believe IS fighters “will use up ammunition, run out of food and, especially, water,” Hertling said. But that will take some time, which IS can “take advantage of” to carpet the city with homemade bombs, build tunnels to avoid airstrikes and move valuable assets out of the area, he said.

Western military doctrine, he added, “is built on taking away the advantages of the defender by keeping him under pressure, attacking vigorously at multiple points, and being more mobile.” That requires a level of command, control and training, which Iraqi forces don’t have, Hertling said.

Gen. Joseph Dunford, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, said in Washington that the Iraqi forces have been “tightening the noose” around Ramadi, but at a slower pace than the Americans would like.

“Progress that has been made over the past several weeks, while real, is not necessarily significant,” Dunford testified before the House Armed Services Committee.

Dunford said it will probably be “months from now” before the Iraqis launch an operation to retake Mosul.

Another Western coalition official, who has knowledge of the Iraqi forces’ level of preparedness, said an operation in Ramadi will probably involve high casualties — something the Iraqis “aren’t willing to accept” at this point.

“They just aren’t there yet,” he said, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to talk to the media.

Another issue that has slowed the Anbar offensive has been the role of Shiite militiamen who make up the bulk of the fighters who joined Iraqi forces on the ground. The Shiite militiamen have been a key to many government victories but also have been accused of widespread abuses against Sunnis in areas retaken from IS.

While the central government has vowed to arm pro-government Sunni tribesmen in Anbar, few have received weapons. Sunni lawmakers accuse the Shiites in the government of mistrusting Iraq’s Sunnis, many of whom initially welcomed IS rule after years of being disenfranchised under former Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

When Maan was asked about the high number of civilians that could be trapped inside Ramadi once the fight gets underway, the Interior Ministry spokesman said he was confident they would be able to flee “to a safe place.”

“We are focusing now on the enemy only,” he added.

#UK US appeals court reconsiders decision on ex-bin Laden aide

//

WASHINGTON (AP) — A federal appeals court will reconsider the legality of the only remaining conviction of a Guantanamo Bay detainee who once served as Osama bin Laden’s personal assistant.

The full U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit heard arguments Tuesday after a divided three-judge appeals panel earlier ruled that the conspiracy case against Ali Hamza al-Bahlul is legally flawed because conspiracy is not a war crime.

That June ruling could have limited the government’s ability to prosecute terror suspects outside of the civilian justice system. The Obama administration sought a hearing before all 10 appeals judges on the court.

The government argues that Congress acted lawfully in making conspiracy a crime that can be tried by the special military tribunals created following the Sept. 11 attacks.

#UK Working with Jennifer Lawrence is as awesome as you’d think, according to ‘Hunger Games’ producer

//

jennifer lawrence

Working with Jennifer Lawrence is just as fun as one would imagine, at least according to “Hunger Games” producer Nina Jacobson.

Jacobson answered a question about working with Lawrence on Quora, a Q&A site, and said that Lawrence isn’t a method actor, so she doesn’t stay in character between takes.

“She can (and does) go from being a total goofball one minute to delivering a jaw-dropping emotional performance the next,” Jacobson said. “It’s kind of a freak-of-nature thing to watch.”

The producer also revealed that Lawrence often hangs out on set because she’s close with her co-stars and likes to read.

Jacobson answered questions about what a movie producer does, plus whether it’s harder to produce or direct as a woman (she says direct).

Ultimately, mentorship plays such a big role in breaking directors that successful male directors tend to reach the helping hand to guys who remind them of themselves,” she said. “We need more women directors so they can reach out to girls who remind them of themselves. We also need more men to be aware of that tendency so that they can reach out to women who remind them of their sisters or their daughters or who are just talented and don’t remind them of anybody.”

#UK It’s just brutal out in the Bakken oil fields right now (CHK, CVX, HES)

//

Screen Shot 2015 11 30 at 12.53.45 PM

It’s been a rough year for the energy sector, and investors in two US regions have been feeling the pain more than most.

The stocks of oil and gas companies operating in the Bakken and Marcellus-Utica shale regions are down 52.3% and 57.3%, respectively, over the past year, according to a report from Morgan Stanley analysts.

That’s compared to benchmark prices for the West Texas Intermediate (WTI), which is down about 45% over the past 12 months.

“The sector has broadly performed in-line with the commodity,” the report said, adding, “performance within the sector has been quite disparate with quality operators/acreage and strong financials materially outperforming.”

There’s a common factor these regions share:

It’s particularly difficult to extract resources in the Bakken and Marcellus-Utica shale regions.

The plunging price of energy over the past year has pinched the companies that have to invest the most to drill.

The Bakken region is primarily located in Montana and North Dakota.

The Marcellus stretches across a group of Mid-Atlantic states and includes Pennsylvania, West Virginia, New York, and Ohio.bakken shale plays us

#UK O’Malley: I want to be your second choice _ for now

//

WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Maryland Gov. Martin O’Malley is telling House Democrats he hopes they keep him in their consideration as he runs for president.

The Democratic presidential hopeful met with lawmakers Tuesday to give an update on his 2016 campaign. Most of the Democrats in the room are already supporting front-runner Hillary Clinton.

O’Malley faces long odds unless Clinton stumbles in her campaign, and the meeting was aimed at connecting with influential party “super delegates” whose endorsement is coveted by campaigns.

He says the country is looking for a new leader and he wants to be the lawmakers’ second choice if he can’t be their first choice right now.

O’Malley has struggled with single digits in polls and badly trails Clinton and Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders in Iowa and New Hampshire.
