#UK Award honors 10 US librarians for public service

//

NEW YORK (AP) — A librarian in California who champions diversity and one in Texas who makes librarians look “cool” are among 10 recipients of the I Love My Librarian Award.

The awards announced Thursday by the American Library Association and the Carnegie Corporation of New York honor “exceptional public service” and include a $5,000 cash prize for each winner. Librarians were nominated by patrons, with more than 1,300 submissions turned in for 2015.

Sylvia Cieply of the Otto A. Fischer School in Orange, California, was praised for adding a wide range of books to her school’s collection, from career guides to ones with LGBT themes. A nominator at the University of North Texas in Denton liked Doug Campbell’s “smart/kind combo” and added that he makes “the library and librarians look cool!”

Several winners were cited for their work with low income residents, including Leslie Koch of the Armstrong Elementary School in Eastover, North Carolina; April Roy of the Kansas City Public Library in Missouri; and Elizabeth Rumery of the University of Connecticut in Groton.

The other recipients were Diane Brown of the New Haven Free Public Library in Connecticut; Dona J. Helmer of the College Gate Elementary School Library in Anchorage, Alaska; Courtney P. Kincaid, formerly of the Hood County Library in Granbury, Texas; Dr. Christopher A. Shaffer of Troy University in Alabama; and Shugana Williams of Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College in Perkinston.

The award was established in 2008.

#UK Microsoft is handing off yet more of its advertising sales business to ad tech company AppNexus (MSFT)

//

Satya Nadella

Microsoft has hived off more of its advertising sales business to AppNexus, the world’s largest independent ad tech company.

AppNexus’ publisher suite will now be used for Microsoft ads to be bought programmatically (using automated technology, rather than via a big salesforce) across 58 global markets, up from 39 previously.

While this sounds like a simple partnership expansion, it’s interesting for a number of reasons:

  • Microsoft is taking another step away from the highly-competitive display advertising business. In the summer Microsoft announced a big strategy change: 1,200 of its advertising staff were shifting over to AOL, which was absorbing Microsoft’s direct sales business in its nine biggest markets, including the US and the UK. Meanwhile, AppNexus became Microsoft’s exclusive programmatic advertising partner in 10 markets, and a lead technology partner in 39 markets.
  • This is great news for AppNexus. Microsoft is its biggest sell-side customer and this deal will immediately add revenue.
  • It could have an impact on the Microsoft/AOL partnership. Clearly AppNexus proved that selling advertising programmatically is cost-effective. A person with knowledge of the previous AppNexus/Microsoft deal told Business Insider that while revenue remained more or less steady in the markets AppNexus had taken over, profitability has increased dramatically. Indeed, just last month, AppNexus announced the launch of a new unit for Microsoft to sell 100% of its ads programmatically. Can AOL’s expanded salesforce deliver the same kind of bottom-line results? If not, what happens there?

A Microsoft spokesperson told Business Insider: “Microsoft has a long standing relationship with AppNexus and we’re expanding our existing global technology partnership to simplify the buying process for our customers and resellers, across both reserved and programmatic inventory.”

The spokesperson provide comment on the additional Microsoft media billings now running through AppNexus’ platform but did confirm no Microsoft job roles would be affected by the move.

An AppNexus spokesperson explained why the expanded deal is a “big win” for the ad tech company:

“First, it expands our engagement with Microsoft, which is our biggest sell-side customer. Second, it brings nine new sales houses onto our platform and expands buying commitments with four existing sales house customers. Third, it positions us to expand in Latin America, where earlier this year we acquired Real Media Latin America. A robust expansion in that market will bolster our clearly articulated mission to take [Google’s] DoubleClick for Publishers head-on in 2016.”

Microsoft is also an investor in AppNexus, having participated in its $50 million Series C round back in 2010. In total, AppNexus has received $288 million in funding, is valued at $1.2 billion, and is expected to be heading towards an IPO in 2016.

While Microsoft has been slowly shutting down several of its advertising divisions over the years, the company is still a big player in the online advertising space through its search engine Bing.

Part of the 10-year deal with AOL also saw Bing taking over from Google to power search listing and ads for all AOL owned and operated properties such as The Huffington Post and TechCrunch — adding a modest increase to its share of the search market, behind Google.

The advantage of Bing ads for Microsoft is that they are mostly bought through a self-serve platform, meaning it requires fewer sales staff than its display ad business. Microsoft’s first quarter earnings showed Bing had reached profitability, contributing more than $1 billion to revenue in the period.

The news of the expanded AppNexus partnership is yet more evidence that Microsoft is internally refocusing around its strengths and cutting out more unnecessary costs to improve its bottom-line.

#UK Toyota harbors big ambitions for “partner robot” business

//

TOKYO (AP) — Toyota Motor Corp. is harboring big ambitions to become a significant player in the growing market for robots that help the elderly and other people get around in everyday life.

The company believes it can use its manufacturing expertise to become as crucial in a field it calls “partner robots” as it is to auto-making. Robotics engineers at Toyota currently number only 150 out of a worldwide staff of 300,000 but it is plowing money into research and development.

Toyota last month announced a $1 billion investment in a research company headed by robotics expert Gill Pratt in Silicon Valley to develop artificial intelligence and robotics. It is already working with Stanford University and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology on robotics.

“We are preparing for a future in which people may not be able to drive cars, or they may need artificial intelligence to support them to drive, and once they get off their cars they may need help from partner robots,” said Akifumi Tamaoki, general manager of Toyota’s partner robot division.

The Japanese government is banking on robotics as a growth industry in a society that’s aging at a faster pace than any other industrialized nation. Other companies have jumped in, including Internet company Softbank Corp., which is selling a humanoid that carries on simple conversations.

Speaking to The Associated Press at a Tokyo robot show this week, Tamaoki said Toyota’s robotics interests go back decades, including their use in manufacturing at its auto plants. But it now sees the technology as a viable business in its own right.

Some of that impetus comes from the focus of the auto and tech industries on using artificial intelligence to develop cars that can drive autonomously. Google Inc. is trialing driverless vehicles and Toyota’s Japanese rival Nissan Motor Co. is especially confident about the technology with plans to start selling such vehicles by 2020.

Honda Motor Co. was a leader in robots with its Asimo walking and talking child-shaped robot, in development for more than two decades. But critics say that effort got sidetracked by focusing too much on duplicating human movements and behavior, and lost sight of trying to be useful.

Honda officials acknowledge the company went through soul-searching after getting targeted with public criticism when Asimo could do nothing to help people after the March 2011 nuclear disaster in Japan.

Toyota demonstrated a one-armed partner robot on-wheels loaded with sensors and cameras, earlier this year. The R2-D2 lookalike known as HSR, or Human Support Robot, can pick up after people, bring an item to the bedside or open curtains.

The robot, an improved version of a model first shown in 2012, is not yet for commercial sale. Toyota is collaborating with 10 universities in Japan, with plans to extend that to overseas academic organizations next year, to develop practical uses, Tamaoki said.

Tamaoki believes robots like HSR will gradually become widespread, although that may take another decade.

Among the developments in the works for HSR is another arm, which will allow it to perform more complex tasks, and adding conversational skills. It now comes with a flat panel that works like a videophone or video player, but can’t talk.

One research group has proposed using it for taking care of pets, such as jiggling a toy for a lonely cat, according to Toyota.

#UK Okposo’s shootout goal lifts Islanders past Rangers, 2-1

//

NEW YORK (AP) — Kyle Okposo scored the only goal in the shootout to lift the New York Islanders to a 2-1 victory over the crosstown-rival New York Rangers on Wednesday night.

John Tavares scored in regulation and Jaroslav Halak had 33 saves through overtime and then stopped all three Rangers attempts in the shootout to give the Islanders their fourth win in five games (4-0-1).

Viktor Stalberg scored the tying goal in the second period, and Henrik Lundqvist had 36 saves for the Rangers, who lost for the fourth time in five games (1-3-1).

Tavares gave the Islanders the lead with a 5-on-3 power-play with 7:38 to go in the second period. As Rangers defensemen Keith Yandle (hooking) and Dan Girardi (delay of game) sat in the penalty box, Tavares cut toward to the slot and snapped his 12th goal of the season past Lundqvist. It was also his 12th score in 32 career games against the Rangers.

The Islanders improved to 11-3-1 in games in which Tavares recorded a point, and were 8-1-1 in games in which the first overall pick in the 2009 draft scored a goal.

Stalberg cut to the front of the net and redirected Marc Staal’s shot past Halak to tie it with 1:23 remaining in the period.

The Rangers outshot the Islanders 13-6 in the scoreless first period and were also credited with 11 blocked shots. The Islanders had a 28-15 advantage on shots over the final two periods and overtime.

The Islanders were also 1 for 2 on the power play, while the Rangers finished 0 for 3.

The first Rangers-Islanders matchup of the 2015-16 season also marked the Islanders’ second-ever home game against their long time rivals in New York City. The first took place at the Jan. 29, 2014 Stadium Series game held at Yankee Stadium.

Following optional morning skates, both teams spent time spoke with anticipation about the atmosphere inside Barclays Center. And the announced 15,795 in attendance did not disappoint, as they engaged in dueling chants of “Let’s go, Rangers,” and “Let’s go, Islanders,” before the opening face-off. The team-centric chanting continued throughout the game.

NOTES: The Islanders, playing their first season at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, hosted their second home game against the Rangers in New York City. The first was at Yankee Stadium on Jan. 29, 2014. … The Rangers called up Tanner Glass from Hartford of the AHL on Wednesday morning due to Emerson Etem’s illness. In 17 games with Hartford, Glass has two goals and three assists with 23 penalty minutes. “We had some options (and with the way) Glass was playing we thought it was the right thing to do,” Rangers coach Alain Vigneault said after the team’s optional morning practice. Glass skated on a line with J.T. Miller and Oscar Lindberg. … Vigneault also praised the Islanders’ new arena and tweaked the franchise’s first home, Nassau Coliseum. “It looks real nice, obviously,” Vigneault said. “For us, the coaches, the rooms are a lot bigger than the closet we had in the past.” … Along with Etem, the Rangers did not have regulars Derek Stepan (broken ribs) and Kevin Klein (oblique) in the lineup. … The Islanders scratched Brian Strait and Steve Bernier. … Islanders legends Mike Bossy and Clark Gillies were in attendance.

#UK Gwyneth Paltrow’s Goop comes to life for the holidays

//

NEW YORK (AP) — Gwyneth Paltrow’s lifestyle site Goop is alive and well in the analog world.

Paltrow, with a hand from the fashion house of Valentino, hosted the media Wednesday at her pop-up shop Goop Mrkt, open through Dec. 24 at The Shops at Columbus Circle in midtown Manhattan’s Time Warner Center.

“It’s so nice for all of us as a company to experience the digital come to life in brick and mortar, and to be able to bring the whole lifestyle piece to an actual physical store,” Paltrow told The Associated Press.

Among the beauty products, housewares and other goods selected by Paltrow for the shop is a playful collection of sparkly, star-adorned dresses, jackets, sneakers and accessories from Valentino creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli for the capsule collection dubbed Valentino x goop. They’re displayed in the shop under a bright Wonder Woman mural.

“I think of the Wonder Woman aesthetic being like Goop in a dream,” Paltrow said. “It’s kind of like the highest possible end of what we do, you know. And it’s fantasy in a way. It’s really high fashion and it really embodies the luxury aspect of the business.”

She said busy moms like herself must be Wonder Women on a regular basis.

Paltrow said she enjoyed Thanksgiving with her “consciously uncoupled” ex Chris Martin and their kids, along with singing on Coldplay’s track “Everglow” from the band’s upcoming album.

“We had a really nice time,” she said.

As for Christmas, Paltrow hadn’t given much thought to what she’d like as a gift.

“I wouldn’t mind something from the Valentino collaboration, and I really like that new Apple Watch, the Hermès Apple Watch. I got my eye on that,” she smiled.

Paltrow wore one of the Valentino pieces, a tulle mini-dress.

It’s not the first Goop pop-up. The company has set them up in Dallas and Chicago in the past.

“It’s a lot of work getting it together for such a short amount of time, but we have a great time doing it,” Paltrow said.

#UK Ellie Goulding wows Miami art Basel crowd, despite cold

//

FILE - In this Oct. 20, 2015 file photo, Ellie Goulding attends the Balmain x H&M Collection launch event at 23 Wall Street, in New York. The British pop star Goulding will perform from her new album to celebrate her holiday makeup collaboration with MAC Cosmetics on Wednesday night, Dec. 2, 2015, in Miami Beach, Fla. Miguel, who sings that oh-so-sexy

MIAMI BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Ellie Goulding has the perfect cold remedy: tequila.

The British singer admitted she had a terrible cold while performing poolside at a private party to launch her MAC Cosmetics line on Wednesday night during Art Basel Miami Beach.

“I’m going to drink my way through it,” she told the crowd at the Miami Beach Edition hotel. “I’ve had a few tequilas. It’s for the best. I’m feeling quite good actually.”

Goulding’s make-up collection plays on her luminous skin with glowy palettes, neutral shades and big false eyelashes. As a teen, the singer said she loved experimenting with mascara and lipstick and learned by watching her mom.

“I was quite gothic back in the day, so I loved the eyeliner.”

Goulding performed half a dozen songs including an acoustic version of her hit “Burn” and closed the set with “Love Me Like You Do.”

At times, she hushed the rowdy crowd, worried the cheering would overpower her ailing voice, but promised “I’ll come party and party with you guys (after the show) and we can be really loud.”

Goulding is among dozens of celebs, including Hilary Swank, Lenny Kravitz, Alicia Keys and Katie Holmes, who are in town for the prestigious art fair, which is an extension of the annual contemporary art fair in Basel, Switzerland. The fair officially opens Thursday, but many independent fairs and star-studded parties are already underway.

The singer, who has had some killer collaborations recently, including with Calvin Harris and Zedd, said she doesn’t have any plans to team up with anyone at the moment, but left the door open for a reunion with Harris.

“Who knows? I’m sure me and Calvin will do something again in the future,” she said.

#UK Pistorius to learn if he must return to jail for murder

//

South African paralympic athlete Oscar Pistorius was found guilty last year of the lesser crime of culpable homicide -- the equivalent of manslaughter -- for shooting dead Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine's Day, 2013

Bloemfontein (South Africa) (AFP) – Oscar Pistorius will learn on Thursday if he will be sent back to jail, when South Africa’s Supreme Court of Appeal announces its verdict on a bid by prosecutors to have him convicted of murder for killing his girlfriend.

The star Paralympic sprinter was found guilty last year of the lesser crime of culpable homicide — the equivalent of manslaughter — for shooting dead Reeva Steenkamp in the early hours of Valentine’s Day, 2013.

Pistorius, who said he mistook Steenkamp for an intruder when he opened fire with his pistol, was released from prison on parole in October after serving one year of his five-year sentence.

“There is a real prospect that the court might set aside the culpable homicide conviction and replace it with murder,” criminal lawyer Rudi Krause told AFP.

“In that case, the appeal court will then send the matter back to the trial court for sentencing.”

One of the five appeal judges is due to read out the verdict at 9:45 am (0745 GMT) at the court in Bloemfontein, South Africa’s judicial capital.

At the crux of the case was how trial judge Thokozile Masipa interpreted the principle of “dolus eventualis” — awareness of the likely outcome of an action — under which she acquitted Pistorius of murder.

During a one-day hearing at the appeal court in November, state prosecutor Gerrie Nel argued that Pistorius intended to kill whoever was behind the locked toilet door through which he fired four bullets.

Pistorius, who will not be present in court, was released on October 19 to spend the remainder of his sentence under house arrest at his uncle’s mansion in the capital Pretoria.

– Dramatic trial –

His trial attracted worldwide attention as he denied killing Steenkamp in a rage after the couple had gone to bed at his house in Pretoria.

“I was overcome with fear,” he said while in the dock, describing how he thought he heard an intruder in the bathroom.

He grabbed his gun, and rushed without his prostheses to the bathroom.

“Before I knew it, I’d fired four shots at the door,” he said, adding that he ran back to the bed only to find that Steenkamp was not there.

Pistorius killed the 29-year-old model and law graduate at the peak of his fame, following his historic performance in London in 2012 when he became the first double-amputee to race at Olympic level.

Last month he made his first appearance in public since leaving jail when he reported for community service at a police station in Pretoria.

A Pistorius family spokesman said no statement would be released after the verdict on Thursday.

Steenkamp’s mother June is likely to be in court, said her lawyer.

His parole conditions have not been made public, but are reported to require him to meet with Steenkamp’s parents if they wish.

If Pistorius, 29, is found guilty of murder, he would face a minimum of 15 years in prison.

He may also make his own appeal to South Africa’s Constitutional Court — the country’s highest court.

But defence lawyers say he cannot afford further legal battles, having already paid huge legal bills.

In the aftermath of the killing, the Paralympic gold medallist lost his glittering sports career, lucrative contracts and status as a global role model for the disabled.

#UK Stocks are mixed in early trade; oil price slips

//

Trader Vincent Quinones works on the floor of the New York Stock Exchange, Wednesday, Dec. 2, 2015. Stocks were mixed in early trading Wednesday ahead of a European Central Bank meeting where further stimulus is expected to be announced as well as a speech by the head of the Federal Reserve. (AP Photo/Richard Drew)

TOKYO (AP) — Asian stocks were mostly lower Thursday after the U.S. Federal Reserve chief indicated the central bank is on track for an interest rate hike this month and a slide in oil prices hit energy companies.

KEEPING SCORE: Japan’s Nikkei 225 inched down 0.2 percent to 19,894.84 and South Korea’s Kospi fell 1 percent to 1,990.17. Hong Kong’s Hang Seng slipped 0.4 percent to 22,388.16 while the Shanghai Composite gained 0.5 percent to 3,554.51. Other regional markets were also mostly lower, falling in Singapore, Indonesia and the Philippines.

FED ACTION: Investors are weighing the prospects that the Fed will raise rates for the first time in nine years at its next policy meeting in mid-December. In comments Wednesday, Fed Chair Janet Yellen gave an upbeat assessment of the economy’s progress since the Fed’s last meeting in October, describing it as in line with its expectations for the labor market and inflation. She also was careful to point out the need to review upcoming data, including the U.S. jobs report Friday.

EYES ON EUROPE: The European Central Bank is moving in the opposite direction of the Fed and is expected to expand its stimulus program when policymakers meet on Thursday. It will either expand its bond purchases or cut interest rates further. ECB head Mario Draghi signaled that action is coming this week as the bank seeks to support growth and push inflation higher.

ENERGY: Benchmark U.S. crude was up 18 cents to $40.12 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange after slipping below the $40 mark the day before. The futures contract dropped $1.91, or 4.6 percent, to $39.94 a barrel in New York on Wednesday. Brent crude, which is used to set prices for international oils, was up 23 cents to $42.72 a barrel in London. It fell $1.95, or 4.4 percent, to $42.49 the previous day.

WALL STREET: The Dow Jones industrial average fell 158.67 points, or 0.9 percent, to 17,729.68 on Wednesday. The Standard & Poor’s 500 fell 23.12 points, or 1.1 percent, to 2,079.51 and the Nasdaq composite lost 33.08 points, or 0.6 percent, to 5,123.22.

CURRENCIES: The U.S. dollar strengthened to 123.34 yen from its previous close of 123.27 yen. The euro slipped to $1.0594 from $1.0607.
