BANGUI, Central African Republic (AP) — The Rev. Justin Nary opened his gate to nearly 800 Muslims threatened with death from the roving gangs of Christian militia fighters who even threatened to burn his church down. Nearly a year later, more than 500 of the displaced are still living there in fear of going home.

While Pope Francis’ message of peace and reconciliation during his landmark visit to Central African Republic was warmly received at the cathedral and mosque alike, the hard work of reuniting communities still lies ahead if there is to be lasting change in this country where nearly 1 million people have been forced from their homes.

The Muslims who live on the grounds of Nary’s church may now venture out occasionally into town, though they always return at night because of the precarious security that still reigns, he said.

“Reconciliation is a process because it requires hearts to change,” Nary said. “It is not automatic but we will take the steps. And it will take time.”

The danger that remains was highlighted Tuesday with the news that one of the Muslim men who followed the pope out of the neighborhood was shot in the head and killed by a Christian militia, residents said Tuesday.

Christians and Muslims had long lived together in Central African Republic, where it was not hard to a find an interfaith couple before a political crisis erupted in early 2013 when Muslim rebels overthrew the Christian president and committed atrocities. By the end of the year, an armed militia opposed to the rebels attacked the capital, setting into motion the worst sectarian violence the country had ever seen.

The origins of the conflict stem from political disputes, not religious ideology. And yet the attacks of 2014 clearly targeted religious symbols: Dozens of mosques were destroyed and leveled to the ground.

Peace has only come through separation by force: Nearly all of Bangui’s Muslims have fled to the country’s north or beyond to neighboring Cameroon and Chad after coming under brutal attacks. Untold thousands have died and left behind relatives wary of living among those of other faiths: The brutal reign of the Muslim rebel government for most of 2013 provokes painful memories for many Christians.

One enormous question looms: Will the anti-Balaka fighters who identify as Christian heed the call of Pope Francis? Nary said many of the militants who have threatened Muslims in his community are not faces he had ever seen at Mass before.

And in communities where people already have fled for their lives, can there even be reconciliation if no Muslims remain?

The Rev. Brice Nainangue from Bossemptele also helped shelter hundreds of Muslims at the height of the crisis along with his colleague, the Rev. Bernard Kinvi after anti-Balaka fighters killed more than 80 people. Eventually most of the Muslims were escorted out by armed peacekeepers though a handful of orphans left behind remain under their care.

“All the hearts are not yet open to the path of reconciliation. There is some resistance but what reassures us are the gestures that we do see on the part of others,” he said.

While the mosques in Bossemptele have been razed to the ground, one imam has stayed behind and has managed to live in peace, Nainangue said. Time will tell whether other Muslims will return. In the meantime he said he is working to remind parishioners they must learn to live alongside their adversaries.

Organizations such as Catholic Relief Services are working to implement “social cohesion” programs in the areas torn apart during the conflict. Part of that includes helping to heal traumas and eventually will include building bridges between the affected communities, though for the moment in most areas there are no Muslims left to bridge with, said LeAnn Hager, the country representative for CRS.

In Bangui where Francis visited both Christian and Muslim displacement camps, there were early signs of a calm taking hold though it is unclear how long that will last. Hundreds of Muslims who had been blockaded inside their neighborhood since a resurgence of fighting two months ago jubilantly followed the pope out of the area to the center of the capital Monday. In a euphoric moment, some even shouted “the war is over!” Following the killing of at least one Muslim who was shot dead by anti-Balaka, community leaders quickly called for calm and urged Muslims not to retaliate.

“Perhaps the pope’s visit will be a blessing for Central African Republic,” said Mohamed Ali Fadoul, the president of a self-defense group in the PK5 neighborhood. “Leave us in peace. That is enough.”

Reports of gunfire and fighting have diminished around the pope’s visit though it remains to be seen whether those gains will last.

Mbolissa Panphile, a 36-year-old electricity worker and father of two, expressed a remarkable sympathy for the Muslims blockaded into PK5 by the Christian militia as he sat in the stadium for Pope Francis’ final Mass.

“It’s what we want on both sides, Catholic and Muslim. We can’t continue this,” he said. “If a man of God has risked his life to leave his country and come to Central African Republic for peace, this is very important. We must take Pope Francis’ initiative.”

In a particularly hopeful sign, already some of those pledging peace are the very ones who have lost the most, who must struggle each day to accept a future without their slain loved one.

Dominique Lonzia and his wife, Edorcie, are still grieving the death of her sister, who died in a grenade attack launched by Muslim rebel fighters. Yet while leaving the stadium after the pope’s Mass on Monday, both said they were committed to forgiveness no matter how difficult.

“At this moment when the pope has come here, we are going to forget, we are going to forgive all those who have hurt us,” he said.

“Yes we will forgive people — even though my sister had four children,” his wife agreed, then taking a long pause. “We will forgive them because of the Lord.”

#UK This $700 ‘3D suit’ promises to be the most comfortable you’ll ever own — but it’s still not a real suit

//

3d Suit

Techno-fabric menswear upstart Ministry of Supply makes some pretty bold claims with its newly released “3D suit.”

“The problem with suits is that they aren’t as comfortable as sweats,” reads the copy on their website. “We’ve set out to change that.”

To do that, the first change the company has made to the traditional suit is to throw out the wool — instead, it uses a “soft foam-like” polyester which was “molded three-dimensionally around the human form.”

Ministry of Supply claims the fabric “hovers around the human form” with a four-way stretch.

Bonus: it doesn’t wrinkle (but it still doesn’t look quite like wool, either.)

The jacket retails for $448, and the pants are going for $248. The steep price isn’t deterring customers — both the pants and the jacket are already sold out in navy blue.

It’s reminiscent of the infamous “fancy sweats” Tom Brady wore in his GQ Man of the Year spread.

But much like the pajama suit before it, anyone who takes a close look at this getup will agree that it does not pass as a suit.

Though I have no doubt this look would be seen as appropriate in some circumstances, like in a casual workplace, I still have a hard time seeing it in a more traditional environment, like at a law firm or a bank — the very places men are expected to wear suits everyday.

Plus, Ministry of Supply’s “suit” retails for about as much as a respectable, traditional wool version, without many of the benefits of a formal suit. A well-fitting suit makes you feel like you’re on top of the world. A sleeping garment can never offer you that.

Yes, Ministry of Supply created a suit that is comfortable. It’s just not a suit you can actually wear like a suit. Technology isn’t going to replace traditional suits any time soon.

#UK Trial for ranking French IS fighter in recruiting network

//

PARIS (AP) — Accused of running a network to recruit French extremists to fight in Syria, designated a terrorist by the United States and a fugitive by his homeland, Salim Benghalem promised to return to France only to carry out an attack “with a maximum of damage.”

Benghalem, who went on trial in absentia on Tuesday along with six men in France, is believed to be in Syria. Less than three weeks after the Nov. 13 attacks in Paris, tensions remained high at the city’s main courthouse. Benghalem, who has featured repeatedly in Islamic State propaganda, is accused of running a network considered a major French source of European fighters.

His wife, who left Syria with their children, has told investigators that he would return to France only to carry out an attack. She has said he believed bombs were not enough, that “a series of killings is recommended.” Benghalem, 35, has been linked with Cherif Kouachi, who along with his brother attacked the satirical newspaper Charlie Hebdo in the January attacks that left a total of 17 people dead.

The U.S. State Department has called him an executioner for Islamic State and in 2014 listed him as a Foreign Terrorist Fighter.

A lawyer for one of the men on trial with Benghalem said he feared the others, many of whom spent only a short time in Syria before returning, can no longer get a fair trial in France.

“There is a context with the events of the past days that will no doubt influence this long hearing and maybe will have an impact on the serenity required for a ruling,” said Xavier Nogueras, a lawyer for Karim Hadjidj. He said Hadjidj spent 10 days in Syria in 2013, at a time when France itself had been calling unsuccessfully for military intervention against Syrian President Bashar Assad.

#UK The Latest on Freddie Gray: Judge questions possible jurors

//

BALTIMORE (AP) — The latest on the trial of a police officer accused in the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who suffered a spinal injury in the back of a transport van (all times local):

11:10 p.m.

A judge will begin calling potential jurors into a conference room one by one during the second day of jury selection in the trial of Officer William Porter.

He is one of six police officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray, a 25-year-old black man who died of a spinal injury he suffered in custody.

On Tuesday, Baltimore Circuit Judge Barry Williams questioned a pool of about 75 prospective jurors, and 46 indicated that they have been a victim of or suspect in a crime, been incarcerated or have criminal charges pending against them. Two potential jurors said they personally knew Gray, while 14 people indicated that they have family members who work in law enforcement.

On Monday, Williams individually interviewed more than 60 potential jurors. Williams told the prospective jurors in the pool of 75 to return to court on Wednesday unless notified in the interim that they have been dismissed.

___

9:50 a.m.

Jury selection has entered its second day in the trial of William Porter, one of six Baltimore police officers charged in the death of Freddie Gray.

Baltimore Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams is bringing in a second set of about 75 prospective jurors Tuesday after questioning a group of similar size Monday. Court spokeswoman Terri Charles says some members from both groups will be brought back Wednesday.

Porter is charged with manslaughter, assault, misconduct in office and reckless endangerment.

Gray was a 25-year-old black man who died of a critical spinal injury he suffered on April 12 in the back of a police van.

Prosecutors say Porter failed to render aid to Gray, who repeatedly asked for medical attention.

His death prompted widespread protests and rioting.

#UK UN: Polio outbreak in Ukraine is a state of emergency

//

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) — The World Health Organization is urging Ukraine’s health ministry to declare a state of emergency due to a polio outbreak, a move meant to prompt more action from the government in Kiev.

In September, Ukraine announced two polio cases — the first in Europe since 2010.

The U.N. health agency recommended that Ukraine declare a state of emergency and “respond to the polio outbreak as quickly and effectively as possible,” Dorit Nitzan, head of the WHO’s office in Ukraine, told journalists.

Half of Ukraine’s children have not been vaccinated against polio.

Polio is a highly infectious, paralyzing disease on the brink of elimination. Aside from Ukraine, cases have only been reported in six other countries this year, with the majority in Pakistan and Afghanistan.

#UK China’s smog is so bad you can’t even see the ground from the 26th floor of this building

//

China is having some serious problems with smog, according to the ongoing United Nations Conference on Climate Change in Paris.

Across the country, cities are drowning in a smog that has lasted multiple days. Residents of Beijing, where the level of cancer-causing carcinogens in the air are at absurd levels — 20x what is considered safe — have even been advised to stay indoors.

This video, shot from a high-rise apartment building in Hi’an City, proves why locals better listen. Although the footage is shot from the 26th floor, the ground is completely invisible.
