#UK Pope’s rapper stance send Twitter in a flurry

//

Pope Francis' stance at an internally displaced people's camp in the Central African Republic resembles a classic rapper's pose, triggering a flurry of comical rap lyrics on social media

Vatican City (AFP) – He conquered the United States in September, is just back from a hugely successful trip to Africa … and now Pope Francis is an unlikely inspiration for rappers around the world.

And it is all thanks to an AFP photograph that has gone viral on social media.

Gianluigi Guercia’s snap of Francis speaking during a visit to a camp for displaced people in Central African Republic on Sunday captures the 78-year-old pontiff in classic rapper pose.

Holding his microphone in his right hand with his fingers wrapped around the top of it, the pontiff holds out his left hand horizontally, as if counting out beats.

Twitter-wits have had a field day with the image, making up thousands of imaginary papal rap lyrics under the hashtag #popebars.

Most were irreverent but tinged with affection, reflecting how Francis has successfully crafted an image as both likeable and a bit cool with his modest personal style and his efforts to make the Church more relevant

One of the best was posted by @_2pee.

t read: Biblically I’m on fire/Lyrically I inspire/So one day when I retire/Heaven is all I require.

@FloydSupreme offered: “God had a mixtape/he named it the Bible/Jesus had a rap crew/called it the disciples.

What most of the rappers may not have realised is that the slightly stooped, MC-style stance Francis adopts in Guercia’s image is the product of chronic back pain caused by sciatica.

NAIROBI, Kenya (AP) — A drill to test terrorism preparedness at a leading Kenyan university led to a stampede in which one person died and 20 others were injured, the institution said Monday.

Strathmore University said in a statement that one staff member had died as a result of injuries received during the drill aimed at testing the preparedness of the university community and emergency response team in the event of an attack.

Some students told local radio station Capital FM that loud bangs and people pretending to be extremist attackers caused panic at the university, causing everyone to flee to the exits. Memories of the April 2 attack by four gunmen from Somali extremist group al-Shabab that killed 147 people are still fresh with many Kenyans, especially university students.

Previously, one student died and 141 others were injured after students of a Nairobi university stampeded after they mistook a loud blast caused by an electrical fault for a terrorist attack.

In October some students of Moi university vacated the school accommodation on campus grounds fearing an attack after the administration revealed that two students who were missing may have joined al-Shabab.

Kenya has experienced a wave of bomb and grenade attacks since it sent its troops to Somalia to fight al-Shabab in October 2011.

Al-Shabab has vowed retribution on Kenya for its troop presence in Somalia. Kenyan troops are now part of African Union troops bolstering Somalia’s weak government against al-Shabab’s insurgency.

#Asia GrabTaxi and Hailo go legit in Singapore, UberTaxi could be next

//

taxi singapore

Taxi-hailing apps GrabTaxi and Hailo are now legit with the Singapore government. Well, not that they weren’t before, but now they have been granted a certificate of registration to operate a third-party taxi-booking mobile app in the city state.

According to a press release by Singapore’s Land Transport Authority (LTA), the certificates are valid from today (December 1, 2015) and for three years. At the end of that period, the law provides renewal options.

The certificates are issued in accordance with Singapore’s Third-Party Taxi Booking Service Providers Act, enacted recently as a means to regulate taxi-booking apps. According to the legislation, in order for an app operator/provider to qualify for registration, they have to use only LTA-licensed taxis which are driven by professional taxi drivers. They also have to work with a fleet of over 20 cars.

This could raise some doubts about the fate of GrabTaxi’s private car ridesharing service GrabCar. Luckily, it’s specified that non-taxi booking options are fine as long as they are clearly differentiated from regular taxis and the user has the option to refuse them when they are suggested by the app. GrabTaxi has confirmed to Tech in Asia that both GrabCar and GrabHitch, its carpooling service, will continue operating normally.

See: Uber or GrabTaxi: a Singapore cabby’s view
Additionally, information on fare rates, fees, and booking charges must be specified up front, before the user has accepted a ride. App operators/providers have the option to set features that allow users to automatically reject rides with charges that go over a user-set limit.

The app cannot require users to specify their destinations either, in order to avoid taxi drivers cherry-picking passengers according to where they’re going. While it’s arguably a lot more helpful for both the driver and the passenger to specify that information, it’s equally good to have the option to not share that information up front.

Finally, users must be able to specify special needs like wheelchair transport or heavy luggage, and the services must offer basic customer support – which, arguably, is something all services should have.

Companies that operate taxi-booking services without a certificate of registration face fines of up to S$10,000 (US$7,100), imprisonment of up to six months, or both.

A level playing field

The LTA says it is also reviewing applications for the certificate by UberTaxi, Uber’s regular taxi-hailing feature, and services MoobiTaxi, Karhoo, and ConnexTaxi. The application of new service PairTaxi was rejected, as its “fare model did not meet the fare charging conditions stipulated in the regulatory framework.”

See: Weeks after GrabTaxi rolls out carpooling in Singapore, new rival gets $1.5m
PairTaxi matches multiple passengers with one taxi in Singapore’s Central Business District (CBD), providing a method for splitting the fare between them. It’s meant to increase efficiency among commuters in one of the city’s busiest areas. Unfortunately, that seems to make it a no-go with the LTA.

Crucially, the scheme as well as the legislation seem to leave out services like Uber’s. As Uber doesn’t work with licensed taxis and drivers (except for UberTaxi, for which the company has applied to register), it’s not within the purview of the Act.

Taxi companies and drivers in Singapore have previously complained about Uber, but the government has been reluctant to regulate the ridesharing service in the same way. And there have been some good arguments about why it shouldn’t.

Good news all around

There’s no doubt this is a win for GrabTaxi and Hailo in Singapore – a clear regulatory framework allows the companies to continue working on their products and services without having to worry about sudden shutdowns by authorities.

“[GrabTaxi] is proud to be one of only two taxi-booking applications to be officially recognised by the Land Transport Authority of Singapore,” Jerry Lim, head of GrabTaxi Singapore, says in a statement issued to Tech in Asia.

“We believe that this certification is a mark of confidence and is grounded on our past and on-going efforts to understanding what regulators, drivers, and commuters need from a experiential and safety standpoint. We look forward to continuing our contribution towards building a world class transport industry, a shared goal with the LTA,” he adds.

#UK Microsoft laid off half the people working on one of its most important projects (MSFT)

Satya Nadella

Microsoft has laid off 30 employees who were working on HoloLens, the augmented reality headset, in Israel with 30 more being relocated within the company, Israeli news site Ynet reports

In a statement, the company did not give a reason for the layoffs, describing it as a “shift of jobs across the organization.” It’s unclear where the 30 that remain will be relocated.

According to Ynet, an Israeli news website, the 60 jobs come from engineering. Those who were contract workers were laid off immediately with permanent employees given one month to find another job within the company.

HoloLens is a $3,000 (£1,900) augmented reality headset that runs Windows Holographic, a version of the company’s operating system. Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella has emphasised the importance of the headset numerous times, describing it as a “category creation” device.

Business Insider has reached out to Microsoft to confirm the lay offs and what they mean for HoloLens. We will update the post when we hear back.

#UK These are the 6 nightmare charts that worry the Bank of England most about the financial system

//

Investors are starting to worry – like this guy, battling for the ball during the annual Lelo match in the village of Shukhuti, about 290 km (180 miles) west of Tbilisi, April 24, 2011. The villagers of Zemo (upper) Shukhuti and Kvemo (lower) Shukhuti have played the game every Easter Sunday for generations, with each side trying to carry the 16 kg (35 lbs) ball to their end of the neighbouring villages.

The Bank of England published its financial stability report on Tuesday and it’s full of useful charts and graphs about threats to the UK’s banking system.

On the whole, the financial world is looking more stable now than during the Summer, which was dominated by Greek political instability and market crashes in China.

But lots of risks still remain and some, like the threat of a cyber attack or a downturn in Asian economies, worry the Bank of England more than ever.

Lending to people who buy houses specifically to let the houses out is rocketing.

The BOE has long been concerned about buy-to-let, because landlords are seen as more vulnerable to an increase in mortgage rates than owner-occupiers.

Here’s the BOE:

Strong growth in buy-to-let lending, and the potential for underwriting standards to slip, may have implications for financial stability.

Historical ties with Asia mean UK banks are the most exposed to a slowdown in China and Hong Kong.

UK banks have strong ties with China. This is great when the country is growing strongly but can pose a risk when there’s a downturn.

The BOE said:

Crystallisation of these risks could pose a threat to UK financial stability, particularly if shocks to asset prices were amplified by fragile market liquidity. This vulnerability came to the fore in August 2015, when an episode of intense volatility in some markets materialised against the backdrop of concerns among market participants about a possible slowdown in economic growth in China.

The threat of a cyber attack on the financial system is increasing.

Cyber attacks on financial institutions are costly to protect against and dangerous if they succeed. The central bank is trying to encourage lenders to do more to protect themselves.

The BOE said:

The risk from cyber attack has grown over time, reflecting increased use of technology in financial services. Firms need to build their resilience to cyber attacks, develop the ability to recover quickly from attacks, and ensure effective governance — which means viewing cyber risk as a strategic priority, rather than a narrow ‘technology’ issue.

#UK Feminist makeover for Pirelli calendar wins praise

//

US photographer Annie Leibovitz poses during a photocall for the launch of the 2016 Pirelli calendar in London, on November 30, 2015

London (AFP) – Topless women out, female luminaries in: the latest edition of the famously titillating Pirelli calendar presented in London by US photographer Annie Leibovitz has won praise for its feminist makeover.

The Huffington Post’s UK edition called the images “inspiring” and “stunning”, while the Daily Telegraph said the calendar had “swapped sex for substance”.

“It might only be pinned up at some enlightened garages, but the Pirelli calendar has signalled a break with history,” Adam Sherwin wrote in The Independent on Tuesday under the headline: “Pirelli calendar’s sexism replaced by ‘amazing women'”.

“Beautiful, gross, strong, thin, fat, pretty, ugly, sexy, disgusting, flawless, woman. Thank you @annieleibovitz,” tweeted comedian Amy Schumer, one of the subjects of the black-and-white photo shoot.

The calendar presented on Monday features 12 “women of achievement” instead of the usual supermodels, including John Lennon’s 82-year-old widow Yoko Ono, singer Patti Smith and tennis star Serena Williams.

“It shouldn’t be such a big step but it is,” Leibovitz said, calling the idea of photographing distinguished women a “departure” for the company.

Launched in 1964 as an annual giveaway for garages that sold Pirelli tyres, the main calender has evolved from the cheesy to the arty end of the erotica spectrum.

Its glossy celebration of feminine curves has become integral to a brand that, thanks also to its Formula One links, has been described by one analyst as the Prada of the world of burning rubber.

In an interview with AFP at the company’s Milan headquarters earlier this year, Pirelli chief executive Marco Tronchetti had a reassuring message for fans of the annual collection of pictures of scantily-clad supermodels shot by leading photographers.

“It is the one thing Chinese, Italians and Russians can all agree on — we’ll never give it up,” Tronchetti said.

#UK Eurozone bailout fund releases money for ailing Greek bank

//

ATHENS, Greece (AP) — Europe’s eurozone bailout institution has approved a 2.72 billion euro ($2.88 billion) disbursement to recapitalize Greece’s ailing Piraeus Bank.

The amount is part of 10 billion euros set aside for Greek banks under the country’s third international bailout, which was agreed on this year.

The fund, called European Stability Mechanism, said Tuesday that Piraeus had covered about 2.2 billion euros of a 4.93 billion euro shortfall identified during recent stress tests on Greek banks, and that the stability mechanism would provide the remaining amount.

ESM head Klaus Regling said Greece had “cleared an important hurdle by securing sufficient interest for the recapitalization among private investors.”

The ESM said the release of the remaining 7.28 billion euros for the banks “will be decided on a case by case basis.”

#UK Luke Bracey says ‘Point Break’ remake bigger and better

//

BEIJING (AP) — Hollywood actor Luke Bracey says the remake of the action crime thriller “Point Break” is bigger and better because it’s got heaps of extreme sports that weren’t even invented when the original 1991 hit came out.

Bracey is the new Johnny Utah, the FBI agent played by Keanu Reeves in the 1991 movie who goes undercover among a gang of surfers led by Patrick Swayze.

In the new “Point Break” that comes out in China on Friday and in the U.S. on Christmas Day, extreme sports take center stage. Action adventure feats include big wave surfing, wingsuit flying, sheer-face snowboarding, free rock climbing and high-speed motorcycling.

Bracey said some “hadn’t even been thought of when the original was made, in the original they were still paddling into waves.”
