#Africa Jumia launches Nigerian entrepreneurship competition

E-commerce company Jumia Nigeria has launched a competition targeted at startups and entrepreneurs who are developing unique digital applications and smart solutions to solve tangible consumer or business problems in Nigeria.

Jumia, which ran a pan-African entrepreneurship competition with mobile operator MTN last year, is offering entrepreneurs the chance to pitch their solutions via social media for the chance to secure NGN1 million (US$2,800) in funding.

To participate, interested parties are required to post a 60-second video explaining what their business is about on social media using the hashtags #JumiaSuperStartup and #GrowYourHustle.

“Nigeria is a country of promise, and we are optimistic that through the startup space we will be able to help fulfil this promise by developing unique solutions for our ecosystem. We believe that the entrepreneurship challenge is a key element of this and certainly exemplifies the impact of Jumia’s efforts to foster entrepreneurship among our next generation of business leaders,” said Juliet Anammah, chief executive officer (CEO) of Jumia Nigeria.

“Our main goal is to boost African entrepreneurship by enabling young and smart entrepreneurs to kick off with their own projects. The key for us is to give full and adapted support to young talents, from funding to mentorship from experienced entrepreneurs.”

The winner of the entrepreneurship competition will be announced on September 29.
