#Africa Online tutoring service wins Seedstars World Egypt competition

Online tutoring service Tutorama has won the first round of the Seedstars World tour held in Alexandra, Egypt, and will now go on to represent the country at the global final in Switzerland to compete for up to US$1 million in equity investment.

Prize money for this year’s Seedstars World has been increased, with the competition set to visit a host of African countries after South African mobile recruitment platform Giraffe was named the overall winner of last year’s event.

The first event took place in Alexandra, Egypt, with 13 selected startups pitching their ideas in front of the international jury panel.  The winner was Tutorama, an online marketplace for tutoring. Disrupt Africa reported last month Tutorama is gearing up for a September launch of its product connecting parents with top quality local tutors in their area.

“Tutorama was born out of the realisation that school is often not the whole solution to education and the belief that any child can achieve amazing things if they can get the right support system. Personalisation is Tutorama’s mantra,” said Omar Khashaba, founder and chief executive officer (CEO) of Tutorama.

The startup will now participate at Seedstars Summit, taking place in Switzerland in March 2017, where it will be involved in a week-long training programme. The final day of the summit will be dedicated to pitching in front of audience of 1,000 attendees, with the possibility of winning up to the US$1 million equity investment.

Raye7 with its dynamic ridesharing application and social platform, came second, while Ennota, a financial management tool for SMEs, was third.

The 13 startups pitched in front of a jury that included Sharif El-Badawi from Google, Wendy Dent of Cinemmerse, Heba Ali of Endure Capital, and Ziad Mokhtar of Ideavelopers.
