Sirgoo Lee, former co-CEO of Korea’s Kakao, was indicted without detention for his alleged failure to stop child pornography from being shared on the online chat platform, according to The Korea Times.

The executive, who joined the firm in August 2011, stepped down along with his other co-CEO Jae-beom Lee this August, and passed the torch to Jihoon Rim, former head of K Cube Ventures.

Lee was accused of violating South Korea’s Juvenile Sex Protection Law, which requires appropriate measures to be taken in order to identify and prevent explicit materials from being shared widely.

If convicted, Lee can face up to three years in prison, or a fine of up to KRW20 million (about US$17,606), the report said.

Lee was first summoned to appear in court last December, after authorities indicted a 20-year-old man for distributing “massive amounts of child pornography through Kakao” and sharing the images with more than 10,000 people.

In 2012, UK-based Internet Watch Foundation said South Korea was the sixth-largest distributor of child pornography. Since then, the authorities have clamped down on most of the popular pornographic websites in the country, but they can still be accessed using a virtual private network (VPN) connection.
