Jakarta-based food delivery service PORTER announced a new project with the Jakarta SmartCity initiative to help digitalise the city’s street food vendors. The partnership will be formally announced on March 10 at Jakarta City Hall.

Utilising the startup’s PORTER Kakilima platform, the project will allow users to discover and order meals from street food vendors in various locations across the city, providing opportunities for the owners to reach a wider audience. The vendors will not be charged for listing their business in the platform through the project.

According to PORTER Co-Founder Jessica Hendrawidjaja in an e-mail to e27, the startup spent weeks working together with the Jakarta Smart City team and Dinas KUMKM to properly record street food data from food photos, approximate location and coordinates, as well as menu and price list.

Dinas KUMKM is the the Jakarta municipal government’s agency that handles cooperatives and small businesses.

“By putting the street food vendors on the ‘map’, we hope to improve their sales and overall livelihood. This street food vendor digitalisation effort also promotes Jakarta to be known as a ‘tech-savvy’ city,” she wrote.

To perform these tasks, the startup received help from Indorelawan, a marketplace platform for volunteer works.

PORTER is not the first startup to partner with the municipal government initiative. From the food and beverage sector, food discovery app Qraved has a partnership with Jakarta SmartCity and works to help local culinary venues get discovered while also endorsing clean and reliable street food vendors.

Another startup that plays a prominent role in implementing the initiative is Qlue, which provide a social media-like platform for citizens to monitor the quality of public service in the capital city.

Even ride-hailing app Go-Jek includes features — such as TransJakarta bus tracker — to help the government’s effort to build a modern and innovative Jakarta.
