The Indonesian government announced on Thursday, January 21, that it is teaming up with local game developers to set up the first roadmap for the local gaming industry.

The first meeting to discuss the plan happened on Monday, January 18, with industry players such as Touchten CEO Anton Soeharyo present. The next meeting is projected to be held in February.

The aim of the roadmap is to propel the local Indonesian gaming industry to a global level.

“Our steps to facilitate and encourage the growth of the local game industry will be more measurable in the future with the roadmap,” stated Triawan Munaf, Head of the Creative Economy Agency, as quoted by Jakarta Globe.

“All stakeholders in the meeting agreed that the gaming industry is as important as other digital industries. It even made more money than films,” said Soeharyo.

Amsterdam-based gaming market research firm Newzoo reported that Indonesia’s gaming market is projected to reach US$465 million by 2017, making it the second-largest Southeast Asian gaming market after Thailand.

However, the contribution from local game developers remains small at only 1.8 per cent.

“Yesterday we discussed several targets. First, we’ll try to increase the developer base as we only have around 150 [game] developers in the country. Second, we want [local developers] to dominate the local market in 2020. At least, we want to control around 40 per cent to 50 per cent of the market,” said Soeharyo.

This is not the first time the Indonesian government mentioned plans to set up a roadmap for the industry.

In August 2015, Metrotvnews.com reported that the Ministry of Industry and Trade had set up a budget of IDR30 billion (US$2.1 million) to develop the industry, calling for industry players to set up a proposal of action.
