Ride-hailing platform Grab today announced its first cross-border ride-sharing service, the GrabHitch Johor
Bahru-Singapore Inter-Country Service (GrabHitch JB-SG).

A beta carpooling service that was recently launched in Malaysia and Singapore, GrabHitch is designed for regular drivers with extra space in their vehicles to pick up fellow passengers who share similar routes or
destinations.

GrabHitch JB-SG aims to provide solution for 400,000 commuters passing through the Woodlands and Tuas checkpoints daily, according to data by Singapore’s Immigration & Checkpoints Authority and Malaysia’s Immigration Department.

Private cars remain commuters’ favourite mode of transportation despite high toll fees and frequent traffic jams. Grab also performed a survey of commuters who travel regularly between Johor Bahru and Singapore, which revealed that nine in ten commuters (88 per cent) are open to hitching a ride from JB to SG.

Eighty-nine per cent of respondents who own a private vehicle said they are willing to give commuters a lift, with cost-sharing as the biggest motivation.

“GrabHitch JB-SG enables us to out-serve our customers by providing them with affordable door-to-door rides that will make travelling across the border much more convenient, comfortable and cost-efficient. More importantly, ride-sharing promotes a car-lite society which will lead to reduced traffic congestion and a better travel experience for all,” said Ngiam Xin Wei, Head of GrabHitch, in a statement.
