At a time when on-demand local services segment in India is drawing a lot of attention from VCs across the world, Amazon India-backed Housejoy has acquired MyWash.in, with an aim to lead the dry cleaning and laundry space in the country.

The combination of Housejoy’s laundry operations with MyWash gives the combined entity “unprecedented potential to scale and own the laundry vertical”, according to an official statement.

As per the deal, the entire MyWash core team will be joining Housejoy and operate from its office in Bangalore. The company is looking to scale the laundry vertical to 10,000 services per day over the next year.

“Laundry is strategic to Housejoy. The MyWash team is a super smart team and has demonstrated the best operational know how to scale laundry. We now have the possibility to accelerate the growth in laundry beyond the current growth rate,” said Saran Chatterjee, CEO of Housejoy.

Raghu Bharat, Co-founder of MyWash, said: “We see a lot of synergy between MyWash and Housejoy. This is the best opportunity for the team to scale our vision of being the number 1 laundry player in the country.”

Launched in January 2015, Housejoy is an online aggregator of services such as plumbing, electrical, home cleaning, pest control, laundry, appliance repairs, electronic gadget repairs, fitness and beauty services for women. It also handles laundry and dry cleaning, with pickup and delivery services.

Housejoy also offers specialised services in beauty and in-house bridal make-up and is expanding its service portfolio.

The startup is operational in 13 cities across India.

Recently, Housejoy raised US$22 million in Series B round of funding led by Amazon, with participation from new investors including Vertex Ventures, Qualcomm and ru-Net.

Previously, it had raised US$4 million in Series A funding from Matrix Partners.

MyWash.in is an on-demand laundry and dry washing service in India. Through its app, one can place an order and specify the pick-up and drop-off location and time. A MyWash agent will arrive at the time he/she scheduled to pick up the laundry and dry cleaning, and within 48-72 hours his/her clothes are delivered in reusable non-plastic bags — washed and folded.

It currently offers services only in Bangalore.
