Representatives from Indonesia’s Ministry of Industrial announced on Tuesday that the Municipal Government of Malang, East Java, had submitted a proposal to build an industrial area for digital industries in the city.

“The Municipal Government of Malang had submitted a proposal to build a technopark, industrial area, digital creative industrial area, as well as to hold the Indonesian Creative Cities Conference (ICCC) in April,” said Imam Haryono, Directorate General of Industrial Area Development for Ministry of Industrial, as quoted by Detik Finance.

Located in the district of Tlogowaru, the industrial area will be built on 627,213 square meters of land. It will consist of conference halls, research centres and designated areas for different subsectors in the digital industry, from app and software development to animation and games.

Though the Ministry generally welcomed the idea, Haryono stressed that building a technopark in Java is not without challenges.

The Municipal Government of Malang needs to find a stretch of non-productive land that is not dedicated for residential and conservation purposes. It also has to be at least 100 hectares wide.

“You may go ahead with the plan to build an industrial area, but you need to think realistically … Whether it is economic to build such area in Java. Finding a 100-hectare land which fulfills all those three requirements in Java is very difficult. Especially in the city, don’t force it,” he warned.

The second biggest city in East Java province, Malang is only two to three hours away from Surabaya. It is widely known for its tourism and agricultural industry, specialising in apple farming.

Though still incomparable to Bandung and Jogjakarta, the city has a growing startup community. It is home to app developer startup Rimbunesia and game developer startup Clay Game Studio.

Local game developer community Game Developer Malang held its first Global Game Jam event in January 2015. Local universities such as Malang State University also have their own game development community.
