Stressed out from not being able to find a job, a 24-year-old man in South Korea took to the Internet to unwind. But instead of playing a computer game or watching a video, he started unleashing murder threats online.

The man, known as Cheon, posed as delivery staff for South Korean e-commerce firm Coupang on the Internet. According to the Korea Times, he wrote in one of his online posts, “I have collected mailing addresses of women who live alone. I’ll quit my job and go to their houses at night.”

“I will kill women who order water through Coupang,” he wrote in another, said the same report.

He was also angry that people were copying and pasting his comments elsewhere. “I will spend tens of millions of won in finding out those who copied and pasted my comments on other websites, and kill them,” penned Cheon.

When Coupang found out about this, the firm reported the comments to the police. It was only after the police started their investigations that Cheon turned himself in. The man visited the company to disclose what he had done, and to make an apology.

Cheon was jealous of netizens who would boast on the Internet after being hired, said the police.

Ironically enough, Coupang recently announced its plans to invest US$1.3 billion in its delivery services over the next two years. The money was said to go into hiring 40,000 people and running 21 fulfilment centres by 2017.

Kim Bom, CEO, Coupang, said in a statement pertaining to the investment, “We hire mostly people in their 20s and 30s, who are desperately seeking a job, as delivery personnel. We have been creating as many decent jobs as Hyundai and other large companies have for young jobseekers.”

The case is now with the prosecution, who will decide if Cheon should be indicted for business interference and libel, since his comments could be seen as defamatory to Coupang.
