Medi Assist, a Big Data-based corporate wellness programmes company in Bangalore, has invested US$1 million in MobieFit, a mobile fitness startup based in Goa.

This strategic partnership will strengthen Medi Assist’s presence in the corporate segment and will allow it to make inroads into the Indian consumer health and fitness market, according to an official statement.

“Our members use MediBuddy, our patented mobile app, to manage their health benefits and corporate wellness offerings. Mobile fitness, customised to specific needs of each individual, and combined with gamification to add a social flavour, is the next logical evolution for our mobile app users,” said Satish Gidugu, COO of Medi Assist.

“We are looking to create a virtual private ecosystem for corporates to promote healthy living among their employees,” he added.

Started early this year, MobieFit is a multi-product mobile fitness company backed by Siddharth Parekh, Head of Paragon Partners, and Mahesh Murthy, Managing Partner of SeedFund. It has developed FirstRun, a voice-assisted coaching-based running app that also allows advanced performance tracking of every run.

In addition, the app has a store that sells curated running merchandise and a content library with instructional videos.

The app claims to have garnered over 150,000 users.

MobieFit will launch more apps in other areas of fitness in 2016.

“Fitness is as stratified as the restaurant business in India. Over 50 million people walk, over 10 million practise Yoga and over 7.5 million are members of gyms. At the same time, Indians are migrating everything in their lives to their mobiles: banking, learning, entertainment and more. This is precisely the reason why we are building products that are available in your pocket wherever you are,” said Gourav Jaswal, Director of MobieFit.

“With our partnership with Medi Assist, we hope to take our mFitness offering to more than 5 million corporate employees in urban India,” he added.

Medi Assist manages corporate wellness programmes for several corporate customers. Rather than generic wellness activities, the company uses data analytics to develop wellness programmes that address the requirements of each corporate and each employee. The focus is both on preventive care and fitness as well as management of chronic conditions such as diabetes and hypertension.
