In a race to the bottom to win more customers, fibre broadband providers in Singapore have gone from offering no contracts and freebies to slashing prices.

Now, one new internet provider WhizComms is staking its claim as the country’s cheapest broadband provider by offering customers 1GB fibre broadband for 24 months at S$32 (US$23), and S$36 (US$26) or a 12 months plan.

Before WhizComms, M1’s S$39 (US$28) 24 months 1GB fibre broadband was the market’s cheapest.

In an interview with the Straits Times, Managing Director of WhizComms, Chiang Chee Cheong, said the barebones structure of the plan helps to keep cost low — customers have to purchase routers and modems.

Additionally, unlike other established providers, WhizComms is a virtual operator, relying on existing fibre optic network infrastructure and purchases network access wholesale from Singtel. It also has no physical retail outlets.

WhizComms is currently having a promotion where the first 1,000 customers are given a free three-month trial with an option to terminate the service when the trial is up.
