Ola also plans to build smarter routing algorithms to improve efficiency for drivers and lower ETAs for customers
India’s leading taxi and auto-rickshaw booking app Ola has announced a partnership with MapmyIndia, a company providing digital map data, navigation and tracking products, besides GPS- and GIS- based systems integration services.
As per the deal, Ola will get complete access to mapping data from MapmyIndia, which has the IP ownership for the digital map data for the country.
The partnership comes a couple of days after Ola raised US$500 million in its Series F round of funding from investors, including Baillie Gifford, Falcon Edge Capital, Tiger Global, SoftBank Group and Didi Kuaidi.
Geo-information is at the core of Ola’s mobility business and is an area where it has invested considerably since inception. The ride hailing app mines billions of location data points from ride requests and fulfilment on its platform every day, enabling product innovations like real-time location updates atop the mapping data that it has now acquired.
Ola also plans to build smarter routing algorithms that will result in improved efficiency for driver-partners and significantly lower ETAs for customers in the time to come.
“We aim to constantly innovate as we pursue our mission of building mobility for a billion people. Technology innovations around mapping and geo-location will help us build a better experience for driver-partners and customers. This brings onboard a wealth of mapping information like no other in the country, as we continue to build a world class product experience for users in the time to come,” said Ankit Bhati, Co-founder and CTO of Ola.
Founded in Jan 2011 by IIT Bombay alumni Bhavish Aggarwal and Bhati, Ola is present in 102 cities and has over 275,000 cabs, 75,000 auto rickshaws, Kaali Peeli taxis and yellow taxis on its platform.
