Despite global challenges that may be barriers for travel and tourism, the numbers have gone up; international tourism has sustained its growth in 2016, marking the 7th consecutive year of growth after the 2009 global financial and economic crisis.

Travel startups are beginning to capitalise; where once there were a few large players (think AirBNB and Expedia), small companies scrambling to get a share of the very large pie are quickly taking up the challenge of trying to develop tech for an industry that is ripe for disruption.
