Flurry’s report on mobile app usage in 2015 shows that use of personalisation apps continues to skyrocket, while game apps dipped

App usage

The adoption of smartphones has ballooned in recent years and will continue to grow in leaps and bounds as cheaper alternatives such as Xiaomi and Huawei continue to flood the market.

Naturally, this has, in turn, caused a spike in mobile app usage. According to a report published by Flurry, a mobile analytics company which tracks over 2.1 billion mobile devices globally, mobile app usage continued its high growth rate, with 58 per cent year over year (YoY) in 2015.

Although that was a decline from previous years, 76 per cent in 2014, and 103 per cent in 2013, Flurry states that it is still a very positive sign, given that the mobile app industry is already maturing.

Overall, personalisation apps such as customised emoji keyboards or Android lock screens, saw the biggest boost in usage, with a whopping 332 per cent.

The breakdown of the other positive growth app categories are as follows:

1. News and magazines apps – 135 per cent
2. Productivity apps – 125 per cent
3. Lifestyle and shopping apps – 81 per cent
4. Travel and navigation apps – 54 per cent
5. Sports – 53 per cent
6. Messaging and social – 51 per cent
7. Music, media and entertainment – 21 per cent

Oddly enough, games app registered negative growth, at -1 per cent.

Rise of the phablets

The same report also did an analysis on the impact of the growing adoption of bigger smartphones — commonly known as phablets — such as the iPhone 6 plus, Samsung Note and Google Nexus 6 series.

Overall, the time spent on phablets grew by 334 per cent.

In addition, the growth rate of app usage in some categories grew at least four to give times more than the smaller smartphones. For news and magazines apps, it grew by 721 per cent, sports apps grew by 274 per cent and music, media and entertainment apps grew by 88 per cent.

Based on this trend, Flurry concludes that the screen size plays a significant role in how people consume media, and that bigger screen sizes are definitely catching on.
