Nitrous.io, a Singapore and San Francisco-based startup that aimed to reduce the hassle of setting up a computer for programming through a “cloud IDE”, announced in a blog post that it will shut down. No reason was given.

The startup had received US$7.7 million in total funding from well-known backers like Facebook co-founder Eduardo Saverin, Bessemer Venture Partners, 500 Startups, CrunchFund, and Golden Gate Ventures.

The company said it will give users 15 days to download their data before it’s deleted. It’ll also refund some of its customers, and release an open source and self-hosted version of its software.

A cloud IDE (integrated development environment) equips developers with all the tools they need to begin programming, without the need for a complex configuration process on their computer. Instead, the programmer accesses a ready-made IDE from a remote server.

There are other cloud IDEs out there, including open source tools Eclipse Orion and Koding, as well as Cloud9 (which was acquired by Amazon Web Services).
