Somewhat stealthily, Block71 set up a new incubator and co-working spot in the middle of Jakarta.

It’s already home to a number of startups like online pawn shop Pinjam and on-demand cleaning service KliknKlin, but hasn’t had a public launch yet.

Block71 Jakarta is a branch of the Singaporean startup hub by the same name.

In Singapore, the massive, state-backed initiative to boost innovation in the city state sprawls across several buildings and has the capacity to house 750 startups.

NUS Enterprise, which is connected with Singapore’s National University, is one of the agents driving Block71’s growth and is responsible for international expansion.

In 2015, it set up a branch in San Francisco. A similar hub also exists in Suzhou, China.

The goal is to create corridors through which Singaporean innovators can explore market opportunities abroad, and vice versa.

In Indonesia, NUS Enterprise teamed up with Salim Group – a local conglomerate perhaps best known for its F&B brands, like its instant-noodle brand Indomie, and its ubiquitous chain of Indomaret convenience stores. Startups housed at Block71 Jakarta can benefit from access to Salim Group’s vast business network.
