The office will serve as its regional headquarters
Silicon Valley’s hotshot unicorn Slack has officially launched its APAC headquarters in the land down under. As a nod to the valley’s culture (we presume), it is located in the heritage Carlton Brewery site in Melbourne.
With this new office, Slack aims to create 70 new local jobs.
“I’m very happy to be here in person to be able to officially open Slack in Australia,” said Stewart Butterfield, CEO and co-founder of Slack. “Melbourne has been incredibly welcoming and offers a wealth of talent, which made choosing the city as our Asia Pacific headquarters an easy decision.”
Last year, Slack was mulling between expanding to Australia or Singapore, but ultimately picked the former.

In an interview with The Australian, Butterfield cited employee base as the key decider.
“Melbourne has a little bit less competition than some other centres for talent but a very well-educated, English-speaking population that would make great employees for us.”
Uh..the last time I checked, English is still the main medium of instruction in Singapore. Also, two of our local universities NTU and NUS are ranked amongst the top 13 in the world. The Australia National University (ANU) trails behind at number 19.
Butterfield also cited Melbourne’s “cool night-life” as another factor.
Alright, that, I have to concur, but we are catching up. But enough sour-grape-flavoured whining, here are some pictures to feast your eyes on.
Founded in 2013, the team communication app has acquired 2.3 million daily active users, and over 675,000 paying users. It claims 1.5 billion messages are sent every month.
To date, it has raised over US$340M with a post-funding valuation of US$2.8 billion.
