#Asia Sorry Southeast Asia, no plans announced yet for Pokémon Go launch

BEADS FINAL (1)

The Southeast Asia gaming, tech and general nerd community has not felt FOMO like this since…well…since ever.

As Westerners consistently violate trespassing laws searching for rare Pokémon, we are left to sigh and stare aimlessly out the window after reading the latest news update (made even more frustrating by the impossibility of avoiding such stories).

Unfortunately, this situation does not appear to be changing soon.

Niantic, the developers behind Pokémon Go, issued the following statement overnight — through its PR agency fortyseven communications — to IGN about future expansion of the game.

“The team is currently heads down working on the game. We do not have any announced plans for countries beyond New Zealand, Australia, US and Germany at the moment.”

Chris Kramer, Vice President

fortyseven communications

With the Internet rumour mill in overdrive — and even apparent accidental server launches in Singapore, Hong Kong and Taipei — the fortyseven communications comment is currently the most accurate update online.

For readers wondering, the quick roundup of where the game is available is as follows:

  • United States
  • New Zealand
  • Australia
  • Germany
  • United Kingdom

(Can we point out the absurdity that the game is still not available in Japan?)

For fans of Pokémon in Southeast Asia — and at this point who isn’t one — they will just have to exercise some patience, fire up the ol’ Gameboy Color and re-live the magic with Pokémon Blue (because we all know there are only two real Pokémon games).

Plus, there are ways to get the game in the region even if it has not officially been launched.
