Strapless bras are staples for many women, but the designs tend to be uncomfortable or unrealiable.
A Los Angeles-based startup is trying to fix that with a sticky strapless bra inspired by — that’s right — gecko feet.
Anthony Roy, a mechanical engineer, founded Kellie K Apparel after his wife, Kellie, was having trouble finding a supportive strapless bra that stayed up. Roy set out to make a prototype using the first iteration of GeckTech, a gecko-inspired adhesive created with a modified substance he got from his work with robotics.
To be clear, the bras are not made from gecko feet; the adhesive just works in a similar way. Gecko feet aren’t sticky to the touch, but they can stick to almost any surfac, thanks to millions of tiny hairs that stick because of Van der Waals forces. Van der Waals forces create a weak electric field that attracts molecules to one another; the forces stay the same even in extreme temperature, pressure and radiation conditions. Read more…
