#Asia Indonesia’s Kincir launches news portal for the young at heart

The portal, Viral, will feature news and feature articles on entertainment, lifestyle, and current issues in youth’s perspective

Indonesian fan-based social media platform Kincir today launched a youth-focussed online news portal Viral during a media conference in South Jakarta.

Viral will contain news and feature stories on entertainment and lifestyle targeted for youth aged 15 to 25 years old. The portal will also discuss current issues, such as politics or terrorism, emphasising the youth’s perspective and lingo. It will also accept submissions from readers who are of the portal’s target audience.

“Kincir is a platform for die-hard fans, which is targeted at a very specific audience. There is a great potential [for the product] to become stagnant. Which is why I attempt to widen Kincir’s audience reach … by launching a news portal,” said Giring Ganesha, CEO and Co-Founder of Kincir.

Viral went online in December 2015, and it is currently available in beta form as a desktop and mobile site. During the launch event, it also announced an essay writing competition to encourage Viral readers to get articles published.

Viral is the latest addition in Indonesia’s content-providing startups, after entertainment site Malesbanget and Buzzfeed-like Hipwee. According to Ganesha, the main difference between Viral and Malesbanget is the target audience.

“We are focussing on teenagers while Malesbanget is for [a] more mature audience,” he explained as quoted by Marketeers.

Kincir itself is a social media platform for fans to interact with fellow fans and their favourite celebrities. The West Jakarta-based startup is a subsidiary of Gajah Merah Terbang which is a part of Merah Putih Incubator, a GDP Ventures portfolio company. It is currently available as a desktop and mobile site, and an Android-based mobile app.
