#Asia Infographic: The ‘crappy’ truth about smartphone usage in toilets

A survey by SurveyMonkey’s Eli Schwartz shows that 14 per cent of people aged 65-plus use smartphones in the toilet once per day, compared to 17 per cent for those in the 18-24 age bracket

Have you ever dropped your phone in the toilet? Stayed in the loo a little longer to finish up a game? You are far from alone. Using SurveyMonkey, I collected over 600 responses from people all over Singapore on how they use their smartphones in the toilet. (If you are curious, here’s the survey.)

What I discovered was astonishing, gross and funny — all at the same time. Basically, the majority of people (69 per cent) are using their smartphones in the toilet, even though 48 per cent think it is inappropriate to do so.

And what they are doing on their phones is truly noteworthy.

The survey included demographic questions, so no surprise that toilet phone usage preferences differ by gender and age but not much. As much as 14 per cent of those surveyed stated that people aged 65-plus use their smartphone in the toilet once per day, compared to 17 per cent for those in the 18-24 age bracket.

When asked whether respondents would eat at a food establishment with a filthy toilet, males were more likely (44 per cent) to eat there than females (31 per cent). Additionally, only one per cent of females thought eating in the toilet was more appropriate than talking on the phone in the toilet compared to males at five per cent.

There were many such hilarious insights and in a collaboration with Piktochart, we were able to illustrate some of these results in the infographic below.
